Midnite is a next-generation sports betting and gaming platform with over 400,000 players. The Core Group owns the foundations of the customer lifecycle—registration, identity verification, payments, withdrawals, account management, KYC, fraud detection, safer gambling, and compliance. You will serve as Engineering Lead for a team of three to six engineers, providing hands-on technical leadership while writing production code and setting technical direction. This is a hybrid role: you'll create PRs, write features, and contribute technical designs alongside formal people management responsibilities. Key responsibilities: - Set pragmatic technical direction and lead system design across clients, APIs, services, data, infrastructure, and integrations - Write production code, create PRs, and release features while contributing technical designs, investigations, and code reviews - Work with Product and Design to translate ambiguous opportunities into clear milestones and frequent releases - Manage three to six engineers through one-to-ones, feedback, performance management, and development support - Develop engineers through design discussions, reviews, pairing, and incident response without becoming a bottleneck - Champion testing, observability, safe releases, and strong production feedback loops - Make sensible technical trade-offs, keep risks visible, and help the team improve systems after production incidents - Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and shared engineering practices; use AI responsibly The team operates at pace with high ownership, constant iteration, and minimal process overhead. You'll work in a fast-moving environment where you shape meaningful outcomes. Requirements: - Significant backend engineering experience, including time at senior or lead level - Deep backend expertise with full-stack, systems-thinking mindset across clients, APIs, services, data, infrastructure, and operations - Strong Python skills, or experience with another modern backend language and willingness to learn Python - Experience setting technical direction and designing, delivering, and operating reliable systems - Formal experience managing engineers, or strong evidence of readiness to own one-to-ones, feedback, performance, and development for a team of three to six - Ability to challenge assumptions constructively and help Product and Design find simpler or more effective solutions - Skill in breaking ambiguous, complex work into simple, safe deliverables - Solid database and production-engineering fundamentals, including AWS, CI/CD, and observability - Strong communication skills; ability to bring others into technical discussions and create momentum across the team
