Overview Energy is building a new layer of energy infrastructure: satellites in geosynchronous orbit that redirect solar energy to terrestrial solar projects via passively safe near-infrared light. The company is in the earliest phase, with every circuit board and harness designed, built, and tested end-to-end by a small, dedicated team. Headquartered in Northern Virginia and backed by world-class investors, Overview Energy is advancing next-generation clean energy technology.
You will join as an Electrical Engineer reporting directly to the lead electrical engineer, working daily with mechanical, embedded software, and systems engineers. This is a generalist role where you'll own a significant slice of the system—one week designing and bringing up new boards on the bench, the next managing suppliers and verifying deliverables against specification.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and capture schematics for analog, digital, and power boards (sensors, data acquisition, power delivery, interfaces).
- Select components, build BOMs, and shepherd boards through fabrication and assembly.
- Bring up new PCBs using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and bench supplies; debug and characterize against requirements.
- Support systems engineering on requirements, architecture, and interfaces.
- Design and document wire harnesses and interconnects (wire gauge, connectors, pinouts, ICDs).
- Manage electronics suppliers and contractors: review statements of work, track deliverables, verify arrivals against spec.
- Run power budgets and first-pass thermal and EMI checks, applying derating and space-environment practices.
- Write test procedures and scripts automating measurements and data analysis.
- Drive hardware anomalies to root cause and close out corrective actions.
- Write complete design reports, ICDs, and test procedures for handoff.
This role is built for someone a few years into their career who has already put real hardware on a bench and wants far greater system ownership than a large prime contractor can offer. The position is onsite daily at the Ashburn, Virginia facility.
REQUIREMENTS:
- B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related field.
- 2–5+ years of hands-on electrical hardware experience (internships, co-ops, and substantial hardware programs such as CubeSat, Formula SAE, solar car, hybrid/EV, rocketry, or UAV teams all count).
- At least one piece of hardware you designed, built, or tested end-to-end and can walk through on a whiteboard.
- Solid fundamentals in analog and digital circuits, plus enough embedded experience to work with microcontrollers and common communication buses.
- Schematic capture experience in Altium, KiCad (preferred), or similar tool.
- Comfort on the bench with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and power supplies.
- Some experience working with an external supplier or contractor.
- Ability to work onsite at Northern Virginia facility.
- U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or eligible to obtain required ITAR authorizations from U.S. Department of State.
STRONG PREFERENCES:
- Hardware that has flown or full program cycle in space, aerospace, UAV, or high-reliability field.
- Exposure to environmental testing (vibration, shock, thermal vacuum).
- Familiarity with circuit design in LTspice or related simulation platforms (SIMetrix/SIMPLIS, PLECS, Qspice).
- Power electronics or battery system experience.
- Wire harness design and fabrication.
- Range across mechanical, electrical, and embedded work.
