Justworks is seeking a Director of Payroll & Tax Implementation to lead a strategic operations function that bridges complex regulatory compliance with commercial growth. This role combines deep payroll and tax expertise with a growth-oriented mindset, positioning implementation as a competitive advantage for the business.
You will serve as the strategic commercial partner to go-to-market teams, architecting scalable implementation frameworks that operationalize complex tax and compliance requirements while removing friction for sales and accelerating deal closure. You'll lead complex client migrations and platform transitions, managing risk with operational rigor while advocating for client-centric, commercially viable solutions.
Key responsibilities include establishing and enforcing payroll operational governance across all implementation activities in compliance with multi-state tax registrations, wage and hour requirements, FLSA standards, and accurate payroll tax setup. You'll ensure accurate quarter and year-end processing including federal, state, and local tax reconciliations, W-2/1099 issuance, and audit-ready documentation.
You will design and maintain internal controls, audit procedures, and compliance documentation to minimize payroll errors, tax penalties, and regulatory violations. You'll partner with Compliance, Legal, and Tax teams to incorporate relevant federal, state, and local tax law changes into implementation processes and serve as the escalation point for complex payroll and tax matters.
Additionally, you'll lead operational governance framework development for TPA integrations, establish control matrices and data validation procedures, and support SOX/SOC 2 compliance initiatives. You'll lead and develop a high-performing payroll and compliance team, scaling operations to support business growth while maintaining operational excellence and regulatory rigor.
