Prefect builds automation platforms for an unpredictable world, combining orchestration, data, and agentic systems. Following the August 2026 merger with Dagster, the company now operates an ecosystem including Dagster (data platform), Prefect (agent platform), and FastMCP (open-source MCP framework), trusted by Fortune 500 companies and high-growth tech firms.
As Director of Product, you will be Prefect's most senior dedicated product leader, responsible for portfolio cohesion across Dagster, Prefect, and FastMCP. You'll report to the Head of Engineering and arrive as a team of one in an engineering-led organization. This is a foundational role building product discipline from the ground up.
Key responsibilities:
- Own product cohesion across the portfolio: define how products fit together, where they overlap, where they deliberately diverge, and the strategic direction of the whole.
- Build the product discovery practice: establish standards for user conversations, customer signal gathering, and problem validation. Coach engineers to run discovery well and frame problems grounded in customer evidence.
- Coach product thinking across the engineering org: raise the bar for product judgment among engineers who carry real product ownership. Help them frame problems, weigh evidence, talk to users, and decide what not to build.
- Design and own success metrics: define what "it worked" means, establish post-launch validation practices, and ensure learning feeds back into future builds.
You'll work in a remote-first, engineering-led culture that values high standards, ownership, and thoughtful collaboration. This role requires influence without direct authority, operating through partnership with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 10+ years in product with real product management experience at the leadership level: owned multi-team roadmaps, driven tough prioritization decisions, shipped through others without direct authority.
- Experience in start-ups and engineering-led organizations: proven ability to carry product weight through influence without a PM org or reporting line over builders.
- Ability to synthesize across domains: multi-product portfolios, platform/product tension, or post-acquisition integration experience strongly preferred.
- Deep familiarity with modern data stack, orchestration, or developer tools. Bonus for hands-on experience with agentic systems or MCP.
- Track record of making other people better at product.
