Pebl is seeking a Director of Data to lead data strategy, infrastructure, and AI integration across the organization. You will report to leadership and own the vision for Pebl's modern data infrastructure, serving as the chief technical authority on data engineering while ensuring scalability, performance, reliability, and strict governance of global employment and compliance data.
Key responsibilities include:
**Technical & Infrastructure Leadership**: Architect and execute Pebl's modern data infrastructure, ensuring highly scalable and performant data pipelines. Champion data security, privacy, and governance protocols protecting global payroll, HR, and compliance data.
**Business Intelligence & Analytics**: Transform complex datasets into actionable strategies across Marketing, Sales, Operations, Finance, and Legal. Partner with cross-functional teams to optimize growth metrics (CAC, conversion rates), billing accuracy, payroll speed, and compliance tracking.
**AI Integration**: Lead Pebl's "AI Everywhere" initiative by embedding AI capabilities into R&D offerings (including the compliance assistant Alfie) and operational workflows across all departments, driving internal efficiency.
**Executive Communication**: Act as translator between technical R&D work and business objectives. Master data storytelling to present complex insights compellingly to executives and the board.
**Team Leadership**: Build and lead a high-performing team of data engineers, analysts, and AI specialists. Foster a culture of continuous learning, psychological safety, and data-driven decision-making across the company.
You will be based in Toronto with in-office collaboration required Monday through Wednesday, sitting at the intersection of R&D and core business functions.
**Requirements:**
- 15+ years of experience in data engineering, data science, or analytics, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role
- Deep, hands-on expertise with modern data stack: Snowflake, Fivetran, Atlan, Looker, and Monte Carlo
- Proven experience deploying LLMs, machine learning models, and AI tools for both production products and internal operational workflows
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing, Sales, Operations, Finance, and Legal to tie data initiatives to business outcomes
- Exceptional communication skills with track record of translating data into compelling narratives for non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to work from Palo Alto office Monday through Wednesday
