Oura is seeking a Director of Core Manufacturing Technology to lead the architectural transformation of its hardware manufacturing processes. This executive role oversees a global team of experts in surface-mount technology (SMT), molding, coatings, and emerging manufacturing innovations. The mission is to evolve Oura from project-specific engineering to a standardized Core Technology model where proven process modules are developed, refined, and deployed across all product lines to maximize yield, reliability, and scalability.
Key responsibilities include owning a 3-year roadmap for foundational manufacturing processes focused on miniaturization, water-tightness, and high-density electronics. You will establish "Golden Processes"—core process modules that serve as the technical foundation for all new product introductions, ensuring improvements propagate globally. The role involves building and protecting proprietary manufacturing IP that creates durable competitive advantage in form factor, robustness, and reliability.
You will drive excellence in advanced epoxy molding, encapsulation, and optical solutions for biosignal sensing, while owning the strategy for ultra-miniaturized SMT including component roadmaps and flexible PCB handling. You'll define global equipment and tooling standards, manage key vendor relationships with molding and SMT providers, and create a deployment model where core technology specialists support project teams during critical development phases (EVT/DVT/PVT).
Additional responsibilities include partnering with Global Supply Chain to qualify contract manufacturers for high-volume production of proprietary processes, maintaining visibility of technical activities and risks across manufacturing leadership, and serving as the technical voice in portfolio and strategy discussions.
The role requires 12+ years in high-volume consumer electronics, wearables, medical devices, or semiconductors with hands-on factory floor experience solving molding or SMT yield issues. You should have proven leadership of multi-disciplinary senior and staff-level engineering teams, a Master's or PhD in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent expertise. Strategic thinking, vendor management experience, global collaboration skills, and strong communication abilities are essential. This is a hybrid position requiring 3 days per week in the San Francisco office.
