Salary: USD 128,000 - 176,000 / annual
Prefect builds automation platforms for orchestration and data workflows, including Prefect Cloud, Dagster, and FastMCP. Following their August 2026 merger with Dagster, the company now serves Fortune 500 companies and high-growth tech firms with mission-critical automation infrastructure.
As a Developer Success Engineer, you will be the technical support function for Prefect and Dagster customers. Your core mission is to resolve customer technical issues with minimal customer effort and prevent those issues from recurring. You will diagnose and resolve technical problems across Prefect and Dagster installations, integrations, deployments, and cloud/container environments. You'll own each issue through resolution, turning what you learn into documentation, debugging resources, and tooling that reduce future support volume.
Key responsibilities include:
- Diagnosing problems across Prefect and Dagster installations, integrations, deployments, and cloud/container environments; finding root causes to resolve issues comprehensively
- Taking full accountability for root causes within product scope while clearly declining out-of-scope issues while still helping customers find solutions
- Backing every diagnosis with evidence and logic; asking customers for necessary information and explaining why it's needed
- Providing complete updates on a regular cadence; escalating complex issues while remaining the customer's single point of contact
- Filing reproducible product issues and surfacing recurring failure patterns to Engineering and Product teams
- Working the queue independently on day-to-day issues and owning moderate-complexity problems end-to-end, including investigations across customer cloud environments
- Recognizing when issues belong with Customer Engineering or CSMs
The role operates 9am–5pm Pacific with a shared on-call rotation. You'll be measured on Customer Effort Score and resolution time, held in tension: speed without reducing customer effort is not a win.
The team is investing in agent-based automation for routine support work, progressively shifting the engineering focus toward complex diagnosis and escalation. This role suits engineers who want to build deep expertise in orchestration and data platform environments and apply it directly with customers.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have:
- Python fluency at the level of reading and debugging someone else's code, not only writing your own
- Hands-on experience running workloads in at least one major cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure) and in containers or Kubernetes, with enough depth to troubleshoot a deployment you didn't build
- Experience with a workflow orchestrator (Prefect, Dagster, Airflow, or comparable) and strong interest in the data engineering space
- Track record of technical, customer-facing work: support, solutions engineering, developer relations, or similar
- Clear written communication ability to explain root causes to skeptical senior engineers and earn their trust
Nice to have:
- Direct experience with Prefect or Dagster
- History of open-source contribution
- SQL and data warehouse familiarity
- Experience building support tooling or automation
