Teamworks is hiring a Data Scientist II to join its Soccer analytics team, developing statistical and machine learning models that professional soccer clubs use for player recruitment and talent evaluation. You will own the full model lifecycle—from design and validation through deployment and continuous improvement—working with player tracking data and event data to identify undervalued players and quantify player impact and skill.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and deploy statistical and ML models that help professional clubs identify recruitment targets and undervalued talent
- Build spatio-temporal models using player tracking data to quantify player impact and skill characteristics
- Create metrics and analyses that support high-stakes recruitment decisions, and build tools for model interpretation and client understanding
- Validate models and outputs with rigor to ensure reliability before production deployment
- Write clear technical reports communicating modeling work to client teams
- Partner with engineering to deploy models on cloud infrastructure and operationalize analytical work
- Review peer code, provide constructive feedback, and contribute ideas to advance team capabilities
The role supports growing demand from partner clubs while maintaining existing model accuracy and reliability. You'll have meaningful ownership, room to develop new approaches, and visibility into how your work impacts professional soccer recruitment globally.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of professional or research experience writing code in R or Python for data science, statistics, or machine learning
- Proficiency with SQL for building and querying structured data
- Strong data science fundamentals: understanding of how models work, data requirements, and data preparation
- Experience working with sports tracking data, including knowledge of typical models and data challenges
- Strong communication skills for explaining modeling decisions to partner clubs and internal stakeholders
PREFERRED:
- Direct experience with soccer data or soccer analytics (team, public work, or academic)
- Demonstrated track record tackling hard problems via published research, blog posts, conference talks, or public projects
- Experience with cloud compute providers (AWS, Google Cloud) for model training and deployment
- Comfort using AI coding tools with judgment to validate and correct outputs
