Axle Energy is building software infrastructure for the decarbonised energy system. The company controls hundreds of thousands of energy assets—vehicle charging systems, heating systems, and home batteries—optimizing when electricity is consumed to align with cheap and green supply. Backed by Energize Capital and Accel, Axle operates at speed in a legacy industry, moving real gigawatt-hours of electrons while scaling rapidly to meet customer demand. In this Data Science role, you will own the full lifecycle of data science projects from exploration through production deployment. You'll build, optimize, and deploy machine learning models that operate reliably at scale, with a focus on energy markets, grid dynamics, and trading strategies. The work spans research and prototyping through to production-quality systems, writing clean code and contributing to robust, scalable infrastructure. You'll work beyond notebooks, turning analytical ideas into real-world solutions that directly impact energy trading and grid optimization. The tech stack is Python-based with Docker containerization and GCP deployment. The company actively uses AI tools (Claude Code) and encourages continuous workflow innovation. You'll be part of a small, flat-structured team where data scientists wear multiple hats, including occasional client-facing conversations. Axle offers a meaningful equity stake alongside competitive salary (total compensation £75k–£200k base + equity), enhanced parental leave, bi-annual team retreats, and a dog-friendly office near Farringdon. The role is hybrid, requiring 2–3 days per week in the London office to maximize collaboration. REQUIREMENTS: - Knowledge of electricity systems, specifically power trading (nice-to-have) - Comfort with client-facing conversations (nice-to-have) - Familiarity with time-series data (nice-to-have) - Full-stack data science capability: model building, optimization, deployment, and production-quality code - Ability to own projects end-to-end from research to production
