Airbnb.org is a non-profit organization launched by Airbnb in December 2020 that provides safe housing for people in crisis situations. The organization has helped over 250,000 people in response to hundreds of emergency events including hurricanes, wildfires, refugee crises, and pandemics. The Airbnb.org team operates like a startup within Airbnb, with a lean data team tackling new problems without established playbooks.
As a Senior Analytics Engineer, you will own major projects building the data foundation for Airbnb.org. You will design and deliver data models, metrics, and dashboards that power reporting, analysis, and experimentation. You will continuously raise the bar on data quality and reliability for the systems you build. Many projects will start loosely defined, requiring you to bring structure by breaking down work, weighing tradeoffs, and delivering efficient, reliable, and maintainable solutions.
You will partner closely with stakeholders across Marketing, Fundraising, Programs, Product, and Engineering to understand data needs, translate business questions into well-defined metrics and data products, and prioritize work aligned with Airbnb.org's goals. You will work alongside the existing data team—Analytics Engineer, Analyst, and Data Scientist—sharing knowledge, seeking and giving feedback, and collaborating with Data Engineering and Data Platform teams.
Key responsibilities include: designing, building, and launching efficient data models and pipelines; designing and implementing metrics and dimensions; owning data quality through testing, auditing, and validation; identifying and improving low-quality data assets; designing dashboards and self-serve data products; writing clear technical designs with tradeoffs; and mentoring fellow data practitioners.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or closely related field
- Experience owning major data projects end-to-end, including loosely-defined projects from scoping through delivery
- Strong SQL skills and experience optimizing queries on distributed data processing systems (e.g., Spark, Presto, Hive)
- Solid experience in dimensional data modeling, schema design, and metric definition
- Proficiency in at least one programming language for data work (e.g., Python) and experience with ETL/orchestration frameworks like Airflow
- Ability to communicate technical solutions and tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical partners
- Proven ability to succeed in both collaborative and independent work environments
- Passion for high data quality, attention to detail, and ownership mindset toward reliability
- Preferred: Minerva and Tableau skills, and an eye for design in dashboards and visualization tools
