Clumio, a leader in cloud-native data protection and cyber resilience, is seeking a Principal Engineer to join the backend platform team in Seoul. You will serve as a senior technical leader across the data protection platform, reporting to the Engineering Director. In this role, you will define and drive the long-term technical vision and cross-cutting initiatives spanning multiple services and core platform capabilities. You will design and evolve system abstractions, make high-impact architectural decisions balancing correctness, cost, scalability, performance, and operational simplicity, and lead complex technical initiatives from design through production rollout. You will set technical direction and standards ensuring consistency across teams and systems. The Clumio backend team designs, builds, and operates cloud-native systems powering data protection solutions—from the core SaaS platform to systems backing up and recovering large volumes of enterprise cloud data. The platform is built on a fully cloud-native architecture using AWS (Amazon S3, DynamoDB), with active expansion into multi-cloud data protection across GCP and Azure. Beyond core backup and recovery, the team builds customer onboarding, metering and billing, reporting, alerting, and ML-driven insights. You will remain deeply hands-on, spending significant time writing and reviewing code, solving complex technical problems, and participating in production operations. You will work closely with Senior and Junior Engineers, Cloud Engineering, Quality Engineering, Product, and Customer Success to guide designs, mentor technical leaders, incorporate operational and customer feedback, and establish durable architectural patterns allowing the platform to scale across multiple cloud environments. The role combines deep hands-on engineering with broad architectural ownership, shaping systems foundational to customer trust and recovery guarantees. In these environments, backup is a compliance-, audit-, and security-driven requirement, so recovery performance, cost efficiency, and reliable operation at scale are key differentiators. Qualifications: - 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant ownership of complex production systems - Experience leading ambiguous, high-impact technical initiatives from problem definition through production delivery - Ability to translate ambiguous business, customer, and operational needs into platform-wide technical strategy and system designs - Experience designing and evolving distributed or cloud-native systems with focus on correctness, operability, and cost efficiency - Experience making high-impact architectural decisions and communicating trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders - Working knowledge of English Preferred Qualifications: - Experience serving as senior technical owner for a team or platform while remaining hands-on - Experience designing systems spanning multiple services or cloud environments, including defining common abstractions and patterns - Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure - Experience in data management, backup and recovery, disaster recovery, or related data protection domains - Experience with platform capabilities such as reporting, alerting, metering, billing, task orchestration, audit logging, policy management, or AI/ML - Experience designing secure systems, including authorization, encryption, and secure handling of sensitive data - Experience mentoring senior engineers and shaping technical direction in collaboration with engineering and product leadership
