Homebase is hiring a Data & ML Platform Engineer to own the data and AI infrastructure that powers their product. You'll be one of two engineers building the platform that handles data ingestion, storage, serving, and ML operations for a fast-growing small-business software company. Key Responsibilities: - Own data ingestion pipelines: Build and operate CDC and streaming systems using Kafka, Debezium, and Spark Streaming into Delta Lake, including replay, restream, and SLA management. - Manage the data platform: Administer Databricks, Unity Catalog, data warehouses, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), with CI/CD and DAB deployments. - Build the serving layer: Develop gRPC services, migrate batch workloads to real-time inference, and optimize LLM latency and cost. - Evolve ML foundations: Enhance the feature store and MLflow practices; partner with data science to move proofs of concept to production. - Adopt AI-first practices: Use AI-assisted tools to build, test, and operate faster; experiment with new capabilities and share learnings. - Cross-team collaboration: Work with data engineering, data science, and product teams to translate customer needs into reliable systems. - On-call participation: Join the team's on-call rotation and help reduce incident volume over time. The role is hybrid with required in-office presence on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Toronto hub. Requirements: - Production experience with distributed streaming systems (Kafka, CDC). - Hands-on Spark and Delta Lake experience. - Strong Python and SQL skills. - Container infrastructure experience (Docker, ECS, or Kubernetes). - Infrastructure-as-code experience, preferably Terraform. - Solid data modeling fundamentals. - Comfort with on-call schedules. - AI fluency: active experimentation with AI tools in engineering workflows. - Ability to move quickly through ambiguity with clear cross-functional communication. - Ownership mindset with attention to detail and accountability for systems built. - Ability to collaborate in person at Toronto hub on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Bonus qualifications: Unity Catalog governance, MLflow and feature stores, LLM-serving experience, Protobuf event contracts, Postgres internals.
