Harper is building an AI-led commercial insurance platform to serve the 36 million businesses in America, 77% of which are underinsured. The company is growing ~1,000 customers per month and has scaled 100x year-over-year. Over 90% of commercial insurance is still human-led; Harper is inverting that ratio by building AI that makes humans more effective while eliminating friction.
In this role, you are a licensed service specialist handling the core work that requires judgment and authority. You manage policy endorsements, certificates with specific wording requirements, binding, coverage questions, cancellations, reinstatements, renewals, audits, and billing corrections. When the front-line team cannot resolve an issue without a license, it comes to you—and you finish it.
You work directly with carriers and wholesalers on routine service matters. You have genuine authority: you can approve policy changes within appetite, govern payment actions, process reinstatement requests, and close issues once work is complete. The pace is demanding—certificate wording and endorsements turn around within a business day; bind requests go out the day validation passes; reinstatement requests go out the day notice lands.
Key responsibilities include keeping policies current as businesses grow (endorsements for vehicles, drivers, locations, equipment, limit changes), issuing certificates with exact wording (additional insured, waiver of subrogation, primary and non-contributory, loss payee, notice of cancellation), carrying new business through validation and binding, answering coverage questions directly from policy language, preventing lapses through cancellation management and reinstatement, preparing renewals with exposure updates and loss runs, running audits at intake, fixing billing issues within your authority, and handing off complex cases to specialists with complete documentation and timeline.
You'll also contribute to product improvement by identifying where tooling should be simplified—you live in the service workbench and have a voice in what gets automated.
The role is in-office in San Francisco (also available in Atlanta or NYC), Monday–Friday, 8 AM–8 PM ET. Hours are long and the learning curve is steep, but the team is composed of people who thrive in this environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 2+ years in commercial lines service, account management, or brokerage operations
- Active property & casualty license, or ability to obtain one quickly (company handles resident, non-resident, and reciprocal licensing across all 50 states)
- Working knowledge of certificates, endorsements, and binding documentation
- Ability to manage phone, typing, and multiple systems simultaneously without losing accuracy
- Comfort with technology and genuine interest in working alongside AI tools
- Based in or willing to relocate to New York City or San Francisco
NICE TO HAVE:
- E&S and surplus lines exposure (filings, surplus lines tax, binding packets)
- Premium finance familiarity (PFAs, reconciliation, finance-company coordination)
- Workers' comp and class-code knowledge
- Wholesaler, MGA, or high-volume commercial lines background
- Bilingual (Spanish)
- Experience at an insurtech or tech-forward brokerage
