Xcimer Energy is seeking a Control Systems Project Lead to own the controls system for a major development program. This is a hands-on role combining individual technical contribution with team leadership responsibilities.
You will own the complete controls architecture including requirements, design, and delivery of control, data acquisition, and interlock systems across multiple subsystems. You will lead sprint planning, assign and track tasks, review contributions, and ensure on-time software releases. You'll coordinate controls work across engineering disciplines—optics, pulsed power, mechanical, software, and operations—defining system interfaces, setting priorities, and scheduling system access for development and testing.
Key technical responsibilities include designing and commissioning control systems for test and measurement applications; developing control, automation, and data acquisition software using Python and LabVIEW; integrating hardware and software for test systems including instrumentation, DAQ hardware, and custom hardware; implementing automated test frameworks and regression tests; interfacing with communication protocols (RS-232/422/485, TCP/IP, EtherCAT); and owning requirements development, interface definition, and requirements traceability matrices (RTM).
You will lead verification and validation (V&V) activities including test planning, procedure development, and reporting; design hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test systems; gather feedback from system operators and prioritize improvements; apply diagnostic and systems-level troubleshooting; and support commissioning, acceptance testing, and lifecycle support for test infrastructure.
This role requires strong cross-functional collaboration, clear communication of status and design decisions to stakeholders, and experience supporting test campaigns from readiness reviews through on-the-floor experimental support.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in control systems engineering with emphasis on test and measurement or validation environments
- Demonstrated experience designing and commissioning test stands, automated test equipment (ATE), or experimental systems
- Demonstrated experience owning a controls system on a multi-disciplinary project, including sprint/release planning, task assignment, and on-time software delivery
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience coordinating across engineering teams and presenting to stakeholders
- Proficiency in LabVIEW including development of maintainable, version-controlled code
- Strong working knowledge of verification and validation methodologies, test planning/execution, and requirements tracking (RTM)
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and modern software development workflows
- Working knowledge of unit testing, automated testing, or test-driven development
- Familiarity with industrial and laboratory communication protocols (RS-232, TCP/IP, Ethernet-based protocols)
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum
DESIRED:
- Experience in large experimental or test facilities (laser, accelerator, pulsed power, aerospace, national laboratory)
- Experience supporting system operators in production or experimental environments, triaging bugs, incorporating user feedback
- Experience with agile/sprint-based planning tools (e.g., Jira)
- Experience with advanced architectural concepts such as Actor frameworks
- Experience with Python
- Familiarity with instrumentation standards (SCPI, GPIB, USB instruments)
- Experience with DAQ systems, high-speed data capture, synchronization/timing systems
- Exposure to systems integration best practices (lifecycle documentation, change control, structured testing)
- Knowledge of safety-related control concepts, interlocks, fail-safe system design
- Experience supporting testing in R&D, prototype, or experimental environments
- Familiarity with documentation standards (test plans, procedures, verification matrices, commissioning reports)
- Experience collaborating with scientists and developing support plans for scientific experiments
