OpenAI's User Safety & Risk Operations (USRO) team is seeking a Device Safety & Risk Operations Specialist to build the safety operating model for a new category of consumer hardware. This is a senior individual-contributor role focused on translating emerging product risks and incomplete requirements into practical workflows, controls, launch plans, and durable systems.
You will define how product-safety incidents, critical escalations, regulated cases, and privacy-sensitive issues should be identified, investigated, escalated, resolved, and learned from. You will establish operational requirements for case management, data access, decision logging, quality assurance, monitoring, and cross-functional response. You will stand up priority workflows through launch and early operations, then help transition them into durable homes across USRO and partner teams.
Key responsibilities include: building the end-to-end safety and risk operating model from early requirements through launch and early-life operations; defining incident taxonomies, severity levels, decision rights, escalation criteria, and response pathways; developing operational playbooks for product-safety incidents, critical escalations, and safety advisories; designing workflows for regulated and privacy-sensitive cases with restricted handling and auditability; translating safety needs into requirements for tooling, case management, and monitoring; establishing clear ownership boundaries across Product, Engineering, Legal, Privacy, and other partners; building launch-readiness plans and tabletop exercises; using operational data and telemetry to identify patterns and improve upstream systems; and determining where AI and automation can improve triage and response while preserving human judgment.
The ideal candidate has 8+ years of relevant experience in device safety, product safety, consumer hardware operations, or technical program management. You should have built complex safety or risk programs from ambiguous starting points through launch and scaled operation. You understand high-severity incidents, regulated workflows, and time-critical escalations. You are technically fluent in data flows, telemetry, access controls, and automation. You can balance launch speed with safety controls and communicate clearly with operational, technical, legal, and executive audiences. Preferred experience includes consumer hardware or connected devices, product-safety investigations and recalls, privacy-sensitive data handling, warranty and repair operations, and building vendor training and incident-response programs.
