WellTheory is a digital health company focused on helping people with autoimmune conditions manage their health through personalized care, nutrition guidance, and ongoing coaching. As the first Clinical Research Scientist, you will build the research function from the ground up, owning the entire research agenda end-to-end. Key responsibilities include: Study Design & Analysis: Design and execute observational studies on member data using matched cohorts, pre/post analyses, propensity-scored comparisons, and interrupted time series methods. Analyze medical and pharmacy claims data covering utilization, biologic and biosimilar trends, and cost of care. Write statistical analysis plans and conduct hands-on analysis in Python, R, or SQL, partnering with the data team for scaling. Publication & Scientific Presence: Publish as first or senior author in peer-reviewed journals read by clinicians, payers, and digital health professionals. Present findings at key conferences including ACR, DDW, AAD, and AMCP. Lead external collaborations with health plans, employers, and academic partners as WellTheory's principal investigator, including protocol development and IRB submissions. Manage all regulatory requirements for studies, including IRB review. Translating Evidence to Impact: Work with care and product teams to translate research findings into updated protocols and enhanced member experiences. Shape structured data capture (symptoms, adherence, biomarkers, patient-reported outcomes) to strengthen future studies. Define autoimmune population cohort logic. Create white papers and executive summaries for commercial and partnership teams. Serve as the scientific voice in health plan clinical reviews and payer conversations. This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role with significant influence over program evolution. You will work across clinical, product, and data teams in a fully remote environment. Requirements: - PhD or equivalent research doctorate in epidemiology, health services research, outcomes research, biostatistics, public health, nutrition science, or related field. Exceptional MS/MPH candidates with deep industry experience and strong publication record are welcome. - Experience applying real-world evidence methods (propensity score matching, difference-in-differences, interrupted time series) to claims data such as MarketScan, Optum, or HealthVerity. - Industry experience in digital health, payer organizations, or life sciences, or clear track record of applied, decision-oriented research. - Fluency in Python, R, or SQL. - Pragmatic view of evidence: understanding when RCTs are appropriate and when to build rigor from available data. - Familiarity with how evidence is used commercially (employer RFPs, health plan clinical reviews). - Comfort working as sole domain expert, saying "I don't know yet, but here's how we'll find out," and collaborating across clinical, product, and data teams. - Current work authorization in the United States (visa sponsorship not available). Bonus qualifications: Experience in autoimmune disease, rheumatology, dermatology, GI, or endocrinology; familiarity with nutrition and lifestyle interventions as clinical care; experience at early- or growth-stage digital health companies; prior experience building research or evidence functions from scratch; existing relationships with key opinion leaders in autoimmune care.
