Salary: USD 140,000 - 155,000 / annual
Root Insurance is seeking an experienced Claims Counsel to join its claims team. The company is an innovative insurtech firm using machine learning and mobile telematics to transform the auto insurance industry.
In this role, you will serve as internal counsel supporting Root's claims operations. You will report to a Managing Attorney who reports to the Chief Claims Officer. Your responsibilities will include:
- Applying expert insight to private passenger automobile claims, contract interpretation, multi-state tort law, civil procedure, and litigation matters
- Researching, drafting, and communicating insurance coverage opinions
- Interfacing with claims management, corporate legal, and regulatory professionals on claims-related matters
- Supporting claims management with research and analysis of multi-state tort and insurance coverage laws to establish operational policies, procedures, and training programs
- Presenting in-person training sessions to adjuster teams and management on legal topics
- Drafting form letters and releases

Requirements:
- Juris Doctor with an active license to practice law
- 5+ years of relevant experience in insurance claims or related legal practice
- First-chair (jury trial) insurance defense litigation experience
- Technical understanding of property/casualty insurance principles
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills
- Comfort with risk analysis, flexibility, and concise decision-making
- Ability to build collaborative working relationships in a dynamic environment
- Willingness to participate in video interviews as part of the hiring process
