Preference Model is building automated ML research engineering to address the brittleness of frontier models in real-world ML tasks. The founding team has experience from Anthropic's data team, and the company is partnering with leading AI labs.
As Chief of Staff, you will be the operational backbone of the company, reporting directly to a co-founder. Your mission is to enable founders to focus on customers, fundraising, and strategy by owning all internal operations.
Key responsibilities include:
Vendor Management: Own the complete vendor lifecycle—build a centralized tracking system with owner, cost, and renewal dates; renegotiate or consolidate to eliminate overspending.
Finance & Automation: Implement autopay for recurring bills and create a monthly expense review process that takes founders under 30 minutes, with anomalies flagged proactively. Own tax filings, accountant coordination, SoC 2 compliance, and security-related compliance end-to-end.
Onboarding & People: Partner with HR and recruiting to rebuild onboarding so new hires have accounts, equipment, and context within their first week. Consolidate Notion into a single searchable source of truth. Within 6 months, grow into the hiring loop by conducting candidate intro chats and culture interviews.
General Operations: Run regular retrospectives with tracked follow-ups. Manage day-to-day office operations, including space, lease, and equipment decisions.
Special Projects: Own offsites and team events end-to-end. Plan and execute the company's presence at AI conferences, including booth/sponsorship decisions, candidate and customer touchpoints, and post-event follow-up.
You should have built operations systems from scratch at a company under 100 people, be comfortable with finance, and have a keen eye for detail. You make those around you faster, communicate frequently and concisely, and represent company culture. You prioritize ruthlessly and adapt quickly.
Nice-to-haves include familiarity with modern ops tools (Brex, Ramp, Rippling, Gusto, Notion), conference/offsite planning experience, candidate-facing experience, and experience as a first operations hire at a fast-growing startup.
