Brains & Motion Education (BAM!) is a fast-growing provider of afterschool enrichment and summer camps serving tens of thousands of students, primarily in low-income communities. The company operates across multiple states with a highly seasonal business model, concentrating enrollment and cash collections around the school year and summer camp season.
As Chief Financial Officer, you will own the complete finance function for BAM!, reporting directly to the CEO and working closely with the Board on strategy, planning, capital, and financial governance. This is a build role—you will design the financial infrastructure that enables BAM! to grow with discipline through its seasonal cycles.
Key responsibilities include:
**Financial Strategy & Planning:** Annual budgeting, rolling forecasts, and long-range planning across a multi-program, multi-state portfolio. Board-ready financial reporting and KPI dashboards including unit economics by program, customer, and state. Pricing strategy and margin analysis for afterschool and summer camp programs. Scenario planning and financial modeling for new state and program entry. Partnership with Operations on scheduling, labor-management systems, and real-time visibility into program revenue, staffing, costs, and variances.
**Accounting, Controls & Compliance:** Monthly close and GAAP-compliant financial statements. External audits, income and franchise tax filings, and entity registrations across all operating states. Revenue recognition across tuition, camp fees, and school/district contracts. Compliance with state and local financial reporting tied to child care and camp licensing. Selection and implementation of scalable financial systems. Payroll tax and employment compliance filings across all states. Oversight of accounts payable, expense, and reimbursement processes. Consolidated financial reporting and intercompany accounting.
**Treasury & Cash Management:** Cash flow forecasting and working-capital management through seasonal cycles. Banking relationships, credit facility management, and liquidity planning. Billing, receivables, and collections performance. Oversight of payroll funding and vendor payment cycles.
**Risk, Insurance & Vendor Oversight:** Management of general liability, workers' compensation, automobile, and youth-program-specific insurance. Risk assessment for new programs and markets. Management of outsourced accounting, audit, tax, and benefits partners. Financial review and approval of customer and partner contracts.
**People & Org Leadership:** Direct management of accounting and finance staff and outsourced partners. Close partnership with the HR & Employment Compliance Manager on labor cost planning, benefits strategy, and seasonal staffing budgets. Partnership with the executive team on org design and cost structure.
The role is fully remote with occasional travel required for Board meetings, key partner relationships, and in-person working time with the CEO (based in the Washington, DC area).
