Resend is building an accessible email platform for developers, serving 4M+ users with thousands of new signups daily. This Backend Engineer role focuses on building and operating Resend's email transport infrastructure—the systems that power reliable, safe email delivery at scale. You will own critical components of the email delivery pipeline: SMTP delivery, MTA systems, routing logic, retry strategies, and backoff mechanisms. You'll design sophisticated throttling systems operating at domain, provider, customer, and IP levels. Your work will include building infrastructure for shared IP pools, dedicated IPs, warmup execution, and reputation-aware routing that ensures optimal deliverability. Key responsibilities include improving bounce classification and delivery outcome tracking, building debugging tools that help the team diagnose issues across customers, domains, mailbox providers, routes, IPs, and message types. You'll translate reputation strategy into backend systems and partner with Trust & Safety and Core Sending teams to protect Resend's sending network from abuse. The role includes incident response participation for sending, provider, and deliverability-sensitive issues, plus on-call responsibilities for critical services. Resend values autonomy, ownership, and operational excellence. The team is fully remote, spans 15 countries, and operates with flexible schedules and low ego. The tech stack includes Typescript, Go, AWS, Postgres, and Datadog. REQUIREMENTS: - Strong backend engineering experience - Experience with email, messaging, notifications, communications, infrastructure, or high-volume delivery systems - Deep understanding of queues, workers, retries, idempotency, rate limits, backpressure, and distributed systems - Experience or strong interest in SMTP, MTAs, DNS, bounces, deferrals, IP pools, and mailbox-provider behavior - Commitment to reliability, observability, operational excellence, and reducing blast radius - Low ego, high ownership, and strong taste for simple systems EXCEPTIONAL FIT ADDS: - Experience with high-workload applications - Knowledge of email best practices - Proficiency in Typescript and Golang
