SumUp empowers small businesses with financial tools and services. The Transfers Europe squad builds the integration layer connecting SumUp's internal systems with financial networks that move money across Europe and the UK. You'll work on backend services that process real money, handling SEPA and UK transfer flows with a focus on reliability and seamless integrations. As a Backend Engineer, you'll take ownership of production money movement services and see a direct connection between your engineering decisions and merchant trust. The role involves building and maintaining backend services, owning well-defined features and contributing to larger projects, designing and implementing solutions following established architectural patterns, improving service reliability through testing and monitoring, participating in on-call rotations and incident response, applying a backend perspective during refinement to identify risks and edge cases, and collaborating with Product, QA, and other engineers. The tech stack includes Golang, AWS, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Kubernetes, supported by observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Honeycomb. The team actively uses AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot. SumUp operates from Berlin with an office-first setup. REQUIREMENTS: - Experience building backend services in a modern environment and supporting them in production - Proficiency in Golang with comfort learning other languages as needed - Comfort working with cloud-based systems, containerized workloads, and automated delivery pipelines - Ability to raise well-scoped pull requests, conduct thorough code reviews, and maintain high code quality and test coverage standards - Understanding of system architecture fundamentals, data modeling, and API design with eagerness to deepen knowledge - Curiosity about how work fits into broader system and product experience - Clear communication and effective collaboration with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders PLUS (not required): - Exposure to banking, payments, or financial systems in regulated environments - Experience supporting systems with production traffic and incident response - Use of AI-assisted tools to improve development speed, learning, or code quality
