SimilarWeb is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their development team in Tel Aviv. The company provides digital intelligence solutions to over 4,300 global customers including Google, eBay, and Adidas, and is a publicly traded company on the NYSE.
In this role, you will design and build scalable, maintainable backend services using NestJS (Node.js/TypeScript) and/or Python. You'll own API design, contracts, and versioning across services, and design optimized data models and database schemas. Key responsibilities include implementing authentication and authorization patterns, building reliable data-fetching layers with caching strategies and async processing, and leading backend technical decisions around code quality and system architecture.
You will ensure system scalability, fault tolerance, and observability through logging, monitoring, and alerting. The role involves close collaboration with product, design, frontend, and data/AI teams to translate requirements into robust technical solutions. You'll conduct code reviews, drive architectural discussions, and improve testing, observability, and CI/CD practices. A significant aspect of this role is effectively using AI coding tools (Cursor, Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT) in daily development, critically evaluating AI-generated code, and designing efficient workflows for AI-assisted development.
You'll also collaborate on frontend applications built with React and TypeScript, contributing to API contracts from the consumer's perspective and aligning with frontend engineers on data shapes and performance constraints.
**Requirements:**
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience with strong backend focus (80% minimum)
- Strong proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS; Python proficiency also welcome or equivalent backend framework (Must-have)
- Solid working proficiency in React and modern frontend fundamentals (HTML, CSS)
- Experience designing scalable backend architectures and data models
- Deep understanding of API design, authentication flows, and distributed system tradeoffs
- Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including query optimization
- Strong understanding of system performance, reliability, and security best practices
- Experience with testing methodologies (unit, integration, E2E) and observability tooling
- Hands-on experience using AI development tools in daily workflows with ability to validate, debug, and improve AI-generated code
- Understanding of prompt engineering for engineering workflows and ability to work effectively in fast iteration environments
- Strong product and technical intuition with excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Nice to have: experience with data platforms, analytics products, BI tools, large-scale data processing, query optimization, streaming/real-time data patterns, or integrating with LLM APIs
