The Automation Service Engineering Manager will lead the design, deployment, and maintenance of automation systems within molecular diagnostics labs and production facilities, providing critical service support to oncology laboratory operations. This role manages a team of automation service engineers responsible for troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of laboratory equipment used in Next Generation Sequencing workflows. The manager will oversee shift coverage (AM/PM) to ensure continuous lab support and reports to the Director of Process & Development, Oncology. Key responsibilities include: leading and mentoring a team of automation service engineers with career development focus; ensuring optimal operation of automated equipment through routine maintenance and root cause analysis; overseeing design, installation, and integration of new automated systems with proper qualifications (IQ/OQ/PQ); collaborating with operations, R&D, and production teams to identify automation efficiency opportunities; managing vendor relationships and contracts; overseeing budget and equipment inventory; ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements; and monitoring KPIs with regular reporting to senior management. The ideal candidate brings a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Automation, or related field (Master's preferred), with 2+ years as a Lab Automation Service Engineering Manager or similar leadership role in manufacturing/diagnostics, plus 4+ years operating and troubleshooting laboratory equipment (preferably high-throughput molecular biology and liquid handlers). Required expertise includes automation systems (robotics, PLCs, sensors, control systems), hands-on installation/maintenance/troubleshooting experience, strong customer-focused service orientation, and proven leadership of high-performing teams. Familiarity with compliance and safety standards in regulated environments is essential. This is an onsite role requiring majority time at the Menlo Park facility.
