Anthropic's Beneficial Deployments team is seeking an Applied AI Engineer to maximize Claude's impact in life sciences. The mission is ambitious: accelerate scientific progress from R&D through translation by an order of magnitude, making Claude the go-to tool across academia, biotech, and pharma.
You will work directly with flagship research partners like Howard Hughes Medical Institute and The Allen Institute, embedded in their scientific workflows. This is hands-on technical partnership—you'll prototype AI agents that integrate into real research pipelines, develop ecosystem-level tooling (MCP servers, benchmarks, reusable agent skills), and help extend Claude's usefulness across the broader life sciences community.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partner deeply with life sciences research institutions to understand their workflows end-to-end, build alongside their engineering teams, and take projects from exploration to production systems integrated into daily scientific work
- Develop reusable ecosystem infrastructure such as MCP servers for domain-specific data sources (genomics platforms, literature databases, experimental repositories), scientifically-grounded benchmarks, and agent skills that other institutions can adopt
- Identify deployment challenges specific to life sciences (heterogeneous data, auditability requirements, prototype-to-trust gaps) and feed findings back to product, engineering, and research teams
- Create technical content and documentation enabling partners to self-serve, scaling solutions globally without extensive hand-holding
Anthropics's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. The Beneficial Deployments team focuses on ensuring AI reaches and benefits communities that need it most, partnering with nonprofits, foundations, and mission-driven organizations across education, global health, economic mobility, and life sciences.
Requirements:
- 4+ years as a Software Engineer, Forward Deployed Engineer, or technical founder with production experience shipping systems real users depend on
- Deep research experience in life sciences, biomedical research, or scientific computing (bonus: genomics, neuroscience, or drug discovery background with comfort getting deeply technical with academics)
- Experience building LLM-powered tools or applications: prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, evaluation frameworks
- Builder credibility from shipping production code as a software engineer, forward-deployed engineer, or technical founder
- Scrappy mentality: comfortable wearing multiple hats, building from scratch, driving clarity in ambiguous situations, and doing whatever it takes to further the mission
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience in a field relevant to the role
- Minimum years of experience correlate with internal job level requirements
