Join Hinge Health's Proactive Communications & Notifications team to build backend systems that power AI-driven member messaging. You'll work on distributed services, data flows, and ML/AI capabilities that determine what message members receive, when, and through which channel.
In this role, you'll partner with senior engineers, ML scientists, data engineers, and product teams to design and operate reliable APIs, services, workflows, and data pipelines in production. The focus is on backend-leaning software engineering and production execution rather than model research or training.
First 3 months: Learn the domain, service architecture, and operational practices. Ship well-scoped improvements to APIs, services, async jobs, or workflows with senior guidance. Build familiarity with testing, observability, deployment, and incident response.
First 6 months: Own medium-sized features end-to-end from planning through rollout. Integrate ML/AI capabilities into product workflows with clear interfaces and reliable data flows. Apply distributed-systems patterns like retries, idempotency, versioning, and graceful degradation.
First year: Deliver multiple production initiatives improving relevance, timeliness, reliability, or maintainability of member communications. Debug issues across APIs, services, queues, databases, model components, and data dependencies. Strengthen the team through code reviews, design documentation, pairing, and engineering practice contributions.
You're a backend-focused engineer who enjoys building reliable systems and understanding production behavior. You can take well-scoped problems from design to launch, break work into incremental changes, and communicate effectively through design notes, status updates, and code reviews. You're a learn-it-all who welcomes feedback, builds depth in core technologies, and practices accountability for system quality and reliability.
Hinge Health is a digital health platform using AI to scale musculoskeletal (MSK) care delivery. The company serves 60+ health plans and PBMs, reaching over 20 million people across 2,800+ employers. Headquarters in San Francisco with offices in Montreal and Bangalore.
This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in-office in San Francisco for full 8-hour business days, with flexibility on remote days during core hours.
REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Qualifications:
- 2+ years of non-internship, full-time professional software engineering experience
- Experience building and operating backend services or distributed systems in production (APIs, asynchronous processing, event-driven systems, workflows, data-intensive services)
- Professional experience with at least one production programming language (Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Go, Java, Kotlin, or comparable) plus experience with software testing, observability, deployment, or production support
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience integrating ML/AI-backed services into production products
- Experience with AWS or another cloud platform (Docker, Kafka, PostgreSQL, or equivalent)
- Experience with asynchronous processing, workflow orchestration, event-driven systems, or long-running state
- Familiarity with CI/CD, service monitoring, model deployment, inference, or model versioning
- Experience with Temporal, Step Functions, Kubernetes, Airflow, or comparable systems
- Experience with generative AI, LLMs, retrieval, agents, or evaluation systems
- Experience in healthcare, digital health, fintech, or regulated/data-sensitive domains
