The AI Applications Engineer role sits at the intersection of robotics, AI, and hands-on field work. You are not a pure software or hardware engineer, but rather someone who can identify manufacturing challenges, determine how computer vision or language models make robots smarter, and build and deploy end-to-end solutions. This is a builder's role for people who get bored at a desk.
Key Responsibilities:
AI Solution Design & POC Development: Work with customers and sales teams to identify where AI (computer vision, object detection, visual language models) creates leverage in production processes. Design and build proofs of concept that validate solutions before customer commitment. Develop documentation, sample code, and integration guides for replication and scaling.
Field Deployment & Integration: Travel to customer sites to install, configure, and commission AI-enabled robotic cells. Own full integration including camera placement and calibration, model deployment, I/O configuration, testing, and sign-off. Troubleshoot on-site issues until resolution.
Customer Training & Support: Train customer operators and engineers on AI capabilities of Standard Bots deployments. Serve as trusted technical resource post-install as customers expand system applications. Feed real-world deployment learnings back to engineering and product teams.
Internal Collaboration: Work with applications and engineering teams on feature testing, peripheral integrations, and platform expansion. Help build internal knowledge base on AI-enabled applications.
Note: This role requires up to 50% domestic travel, decreasing as the team grows. The factory floor is your office. This is a mechanical + electrical + software role that uses AI as a tool, not a pure model-training or code-pushing position.
Requirements:
Must Have (all or most):
- Robot programming proficiency or adjacent software experience (Python fluency expected)
- Prior robotics knowledge (high school robotics through professional manipulation experience)
- Surface-level fluency in ML models and techniques (convolutional neural networks, object detection, visual language models)
- Technical proficiency in engineering environments (documentation, project management, teamwork)
- Willingness to travel up to 50% domestically
Must Have At Least One Specialization:
- Mechanical Design (pneumatics, camera mounts, end-of-arm tooling, gripper design)
- Electrical Design (custom board fabrication, relay/solenoid wiring in automation)
- Machine Vision (camera and lens selection for applications, deployed vision systems)
Nice to Have:
- Experience with collaborative robots (UR, Fanuc, KUKA, ABB)
- Hands-on work with vision systems in production or lab (Cognex, Basler, FLIR)
- Familiarity with ROS or robotics middleware
- Manufacturing or industrial automation background
- Startup experience
