Marble is the authorization and consent layer for regulated, high-value data—health records, insurance, identity, and legal information. The company operates two products: Medchart (medical record request and release platform) and SettLit (compliant health and claims data access for law firms). Marble is building toward a consent-driven network across all regulated industries.
As VP of Engineering, you will lead Marble's engineering organization through a critical scaling phase, reporting directly to the CEO and sitting on the Senior Leadership Team. This is a player-coach executive role combining strategic direction-setting with hands-on technical leadership.
In your first year, you will own:
**Technical Strategy & Architecture**: Set and socialize a clear technical strategy and architectural-ownership model spanning Medchart and SettLit (~6 months).
**Delivery Discipline**: Install engineering operating rhythms—planning, estimation, code-review standards, release and incident management—to make delivery predictable (~6 months).
**AI-First Operating Model**: Stand up norms, guardrails, and playbooks that embed AI as a core part of how the team builds, ships, and operates, with measurable adoption and productivity impact (~9–12 months).
**Team Design**: Define the future engineering org structure and hiring plan; raise the technical bar and clarify career paths for senior and intermediate engineers (~9 months).
**Quality & Compliance**: Raise QA standards across development and data-source implementations, with disciplined release gates that reduce production surprises and keep regulated, consent-driven workflows audit-ready as customers, data volumes, and integrations grow.
You will partner closely with Product, Operations, Sales, and Data Partnerships, and you'll spend real time coaching the engineers already on the team.
**Requirements:**
- 10+ years of engineering experience, including significant time leading engineering teams (VP, Director, or Head of Engineering level). Demonstrated capability leading through scale is prioritized over raw tenure.
- Deep technical and architectural ability: comfortable leading architecture reviews, challenging technical assumptions, and coaching teams in cloud-native, regulated environments. Comfort with the Azure ecosystem is important; you don't need to be an expert in every service.
- Track record of embedding AI into engineering with a clear point of view on what "AI-first engineering" means beyond individual productivity tools.
- Ability to bring structure without bureaucracy: evidence of instilling discipline in lean teams without slowing them down. You understand the difference between processes that accelerate startups and those that slow them down.
- Executive-level cross-functional partnership and clear communication with technical, product, commercial, and executive audiences.
**Bonus qualifications:**
- Background in HealthTech, Health Data, LegalTech, InsurTech, FinTech, or other regulated industries.
- Familiarity with HIPAA, PHIPA, SOC 2, and consent/authorization frameworks; health data interoperability standards (FHIR, CCDA, claims, pharmacy, EHR).
- Experience scaling engineering organizations through growth stages and leading distributed teams.
- Hands-on experience with Azure OpenAI, GitHub Copilot, and AI evaluation frameworks (accuracy, reliability, explainability, human review).
- API, data infrastructure, platform-product, or data-orchestration experience.
