Dusty Robotics is transforming the construction industry through robotic automation. The company's flagship product, the FieldPrint Platform, uses robots to trace digital building plans directly onto jobsites at full scale, enabling builders to construct faster with higher quality and more predictable costs. Dusty operates at the intersection of robotics, hardware, AI, and SaaS, with hardware serving as a core strategic differentiator.
The VP of Engineering will lead and scale the engineering organization through the company's next phase of growth. This is a highly strategic and hands-on role requiring partnership with the CTO, Director of Product, and executive team to translate product and technology strategy into reliable execution across a multidisciplinary engineering organization spanning robotics, software, firmware, electrical, mechanical, cloud, AI, and related technologies.
Key responsibilities include: leading the full engineering organization and owning roadmap, delivery cadence, and execution; shaping the architecture of Dusty's new cloud and AI products; driving how engineering adopts AI tools and practices in design, code review, testing, and documentation; delivering next-generation hardware systems engineered for reliable field deployment; hiring, coaching, and developing engineering leaders; partnering across Product, Operations, Manufacturing, Customer Success, and Sales; and serving on the executive team to connect engineering decisions to customer and business outcomes.
Success requires both technical depth and exceptional organizational leadership. The ideal candidate can earn the trust of highly capable engineers, engage deeply in technical discussions to guide critical decisions, and create an environment where engineers have context, autonomy, and accountability. The role demands software depth with the ability to shape architectural direction for cloud and AI-enabled products, as well as fluency in how AI is changing engineering itself.
Dusty's team is primarily based in the Bay Area and supports a fleet of robots deployed on construction sites across North America, with customers including some of the largest general contractors in the world.
**Requirements:**
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering organizations heavy in software with robotics or hardware-enabled products, including managing managers
- Deep software background with ability to own architecture for cloud and AI-enabled products
- Credibility with both hardware and software teams and experience taking hardware products into commercial deployment
- Practical fluency with AI tooling and AI-built products, with judgment about incorporating them into engineering workflows
- Track record delivering complex products and programs against real milestones
- Judgment about appropriate process levels for a growth-stage company, with bias toward building on what works
- Record of hiring exceptional engineers and developing leaders
- Clear communication with engineers, executives, and customers, with strong product and customer mindset
