Halter is building technology to transform livestock farming through precision grazing management. The company uses IoT collars and towers to enable farmers to manage cattle herds without traditional fencing, quad bikes, or dogs—improving productivity, sustainability, and farmer quality of life.
As a Staff Backend Engineer on the Communication Team, you will design and build fault-tolerant systems handling millions of real-time messages from collars and towers deployed globally. You'll scale infrastructure using AWS-native tools (Kinesis, SNS/SQS) to support rapid device growth, continuously improve reliability and observability across the messaging and network stack, and lead troubleshooting of complex cross-functional issues in partnership with firmware, hardware, and product teams.
Key responsibilities include owning and leading technical projects—scoping work, designing specifications, distributing tasks, and communicating progress and blockers—as well as building highly reliable automation for zero-touch collar and tower deployments. You'll mentor teammates and guide technical direction as protocols and infrastructure evolve at scale.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven experience scaling distributed systems in production as a seasoned backend engineer
- Proficiency with AWS or other modern cloud infrastructure platforms
- Familiarity with Terraform, load testing frameworks, and chaos engineering practices
- Comfort with messaging protocols (MQTT, TCP/IP) and cloud-native messaging systems (Kinesis, SNS/SQS)
- Strong debugging skills and deep understanding of system behavior; data-driven decision-making
- Experience owning high-uptime systems
- Growth mindset with strong collaboration and feedback skills
- Previous experience with LoRa is a significant bonus
