Skydio is the leading US autonomous drone company, serving defense, public safety, and enterprise customers. The company is seeking a UX Product Designer to design interfaces for autonomous flying robots used in high-stakes, mission-critical environments by soldiers, first responders, and utility professionals.
In this role, you will own the UX execution for key features across core platforms including web, mobile, and ground control stations. You will design interfaces that translate extreme technological complexity into intuitive, reliable experiences that operators can trust implicitly. Your work will bridge human operators with advanced AI hardware, focusing on remote operations, 3D spatial awareness, and AI-driven missions where no existing design playbook exists.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing for trust: Build interfaces for autonomous systems that reinforce confidence, reliability, and system transparency in high-stress operational contexts
- Solving novel problems: Tackle complex challenges in remote hardware sensing and AI-driven workflows with pragmatic, creative approaches
- Communicating design rationale: Present solutions clearly, defending decisions with user data and system logic to align Engineering and Product teams
- Elevating craft: Deliver high-fidelity prototypes, leverage AI tools for rapid exploration, and maintain uncompromising attention to detail
- Field research: Participate in on-site customer visits to understand chaotic, high-stress environments and inform design decisions
You will work closely with Design Leadership, Product Managers, and Engineers to map Critical User Journeys and build cross-platform experiences for the national security/defense vertical.
Location: On-site at least 3 days/week at Skydio HQ in San Mateo, CA. Relocation assistance available.
Requirements:
- 3–6 years of hands-on UX/UI product design experience with proven ability to translate product requirements into design concepts and specifications that have shipped
- First-principles problem solver comfortable operating in ambiguous spaces with no existing design patterns; experience conducting research, building prototypes, and running user studies
- Exceptional portfolio demonstrating high bar for visual design, complex systems architecture, and attention to detail
- Experience designing technical tools for real-world use, ideally with mapping/navigation apps, IoT/hardware integration, or complex multi-step workflows
- AI fluency and active integration of AI into daily workflow; excited by how AI blurs lines between Product, Engineering, and Design roles
- Strong prototyping skills; ability to quickly mock up interactive prototypes to validate concepts before engineering implementation
