AtmosZero is building next-generation industrial steam infrastructure. The flagship product, Boiler 2.0, is a modular industrial steam heat pump designed to help manufacturers reduce operational risk, improve flexibility, and modernize steam generation. It generates steam at up to 185°C from electricity and air alone, returning roughly 2 units of steam energy per unit of electricity compared to under one for combustion. The system drops into existing boiler footprints and scales by adding modules with no stack, fuel line, or combustion permit required. Units are currently in production in Loveland, Colorado.
This role owns thermal system architecture and design for next-generation Boiler 2.0 products. Key responsibilities include: defining operating envelopes, control strategies, and system architectures using modeling, test data, and engineering judgment; leading component selection, sizing, and integration across heat exchangers, compressors, valves, pumps, and supporting equipment; owning engineering documentation including P&IDs, system specifications, and design requirements; identifying performance, reliability, and cost-reduction opportunities at production volumes; integrating controls and instrumentation with controls engineers; leading test plans, validation protocols, and acceptance criteria; analyzing performance data to confirm or challenge design assumptions; supporting commissioning and troubleshooting of development and field systems with occasional travel to customer sites and suppliers; and maturing the product through DFMEA, design reviews, and technical risk reduction.
Success in the first year means: developing a working mental model of the full thermal system and running or observing a test campaign within 90 days; owning your subsystem or architecture outright by six months with the team routing decisions to you; and having a design change you led validated by test data and on its way into shipping units by twelve months.
The company is hiring at three levels (Senior Engineer I, Senior Engineer II, or Principal Engineer) and will calibrate during the interview process. Apply once and placement will be determined based on experience.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or related discipline
- Relevant experience at the applied level: 5+ years (Senior Engineer I), 8+ years (Senior Engineer II), or 12+ years (Principal Engineer)
- Strong command of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics with ability to recognize when models are inaccurate
- Demonstrated experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting thermal-fluid systems in hardware (not simulation only)
- Experience developing and executing engineering test programs including instrumentation and data acquisition for thermal-fluid equipment
- Fluency with system modeling and analysis tools such as EES, Aspen Plus/HYSYS, MATLAB, Simulink, GT-SUITE, HTRI, or Python
- Experience producing engineering documentation: specifications, P&IDs, and test procedures
- Comfort with ambiguity and pace of a startup building physical hardware
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Detailed heat exchanger design, selection, and qualification experience (shell-and-tube, plate-and-frame, brazed plate, or refrigerant) using HTRI or equivalent
- Manufacturing exposure
- Experience with industrial heat pumps, refrigeration, ORC, steam systems, turbomachinery, or comparable industrial thermal equipment at an OEM or supplier
- Experience developing controls architectures, operating sequences, alarms, and protection strategies for complex systems
