Chime is seeking a Technical Lead Manager (TLM) to lead the CI/CD platform team, which owns the integration and delivery surface for all Chime engineers. This is a player-coach role where you will spend approximately 40% of your time hands-on in the codebase authoring and reviewing production PRs, with the remainder split across people management, planning, and business processes.
You will lead a team of 4 engineers and own the roadmap for a high-leverage platform surface. Your team manages GitHub, Sourcegraph, CircleCI, Qlty, Artifactory, and the release-safety layer that ensures safe deployments to production. Every merge and deployment at Chime runs through systems your team builds.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build and ship hands-on: author and review PRs that land in production, own technical direction and architecture, partner with senior ICs on technical design discussions
- Lead and grow the team: full people management including 1:1s, career coaching, performance feedback, promotion decisions, and hiring; mentor engineers toward Staff or future TLM paths
- Own the CI/CD platform: set direction for build and integration systems to enable fast, reliable, self-service pipelines with strong documentation
- Be accountable for safe delivery at scale: own release-safety toolkit (Release Guard, canaries, progressive delivery, feature flagging, rollback) and operational discipline around incident prevention and response
- Balance platform-team tension: weigh new capabilities against keep-the-lights-on work, security remediation, and dependency upgrades
- Champion AI-driven velocity: use AI coding agents and tooling to scale yourself and your team across planning, coding, and ops/triage
- Own cross-functional coordination: serve as XFN point of contact for platform capabilities, coordinate inbound requests and outbound dependencies
- Partner across the Platform Org: work closely with product engineering teams, security, Core Infrastructure, and other Engineering Services leaders
Chime is a financial technology company (not a bank) that empowers millions to take control of their finances. The company operates with an entrepreneurial culture focused on integrity, bold thinking, and collaborative problem-solving.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of software engineering experience and 2+ years leading or managing engineers (hiring, performance management, career development)
- Track record of delivering CI/CD, build/release, or developer-productivity systems (continuous integration, build pipelines, artifact management, progressive delivery)
- Hands-on experience with CI systems (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, or comparable), build pipelines, and artifact management in production (must-have)
- Hands-on technical depth: author and review production PRs, lead technical design; strong development experience in Ruby, Go, Python, or comparable languages
- Experience with progressive and safe delivery: canaries, release gating, feature flagging, rollback strategies
- Strong understanding of operating production systems at scale: reliability, observability, incident response, operational discipline
- Judgment to balance delivery velocity against safety, reliability, and technical-debt realities; communication skills to make trade-offs clear to engineers and executives
- Demonstrated use of AI coding agents and tooling to accelerate development and team velocity, with concrete examples of impact
- Customer-obsessed mindset toward internal developers; measure success by productivity and reliability experienced by engineers building on your platform
- Excellent written and verbal communication; collaborative, low-ego approach to cross-team leadership
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Argo CD, or GitOps-based deployment in production
NICE TO HAVES:
- Experience with code intelligence and quality tooling (Sourcegraph, Artifactory, code-quality and linting systems)
- Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and observability platforms (e.g., Datadog)
- Experience in financial services or other high-reliability, regulated environments
