As a Systems Engineer in Robotics, you will define system requirements, design architectures, and integrate Applied Intuition's technology onto autonomous vehicles and defense systems. This role bridges systems engineering, robotics, software deployment, and real-world validation, combining office-based work with significant field deployment and testing.
Key responsibilities:
- Define system requirements from operational concepts and user needs
- Design system and system-of-systems architectures aligned with standards (PYRAMID, FCADE, etc.)
- Build reference architectures for autonomy systems, mission systems, and weapon systems
- Develop system engineering models and artifacts to capture design decisions
- Deploy and validate software on autonomous vehicles, focusing on robotics, sensors, and vehicle autopilots
- Conduct hands-on fieldwork deploying software and ensuring functionality in dynamic, real-world environments
- Collaborate with Perception and Autonomy teams to deploy and optimize perception pipelines (Vision, Radar, Fusion)
- Address inter-vehicle communication for collaborative autonomous operations
- Leverage simulation environments to test vehicle systems before field deployment
- Work cross-functionally with software engineers, data scientists, and field operators
- Document processes and provide system status updates
The role requires significant travel (up to 50%, averaging once monthly for up to one week) and fieldwork in challenging conditions. You will work primarily from the Washington, D.C. office 5 days per week, with flexibility for occasional remote work.
Requirements:
- MS or PhD in Robotics Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Optimization, or equivalent; OR 5+ years of relevant experience designing multi-agent autonomy systems
- Strong proficiency in Linux and command-line tools
- Strong proficiency in Python and/or C++
- Hands-on experience with robotic systems, sensors (RADAR, cameras), and vehicle autopilots (e.g., PX4, ROS)
- Knowledge of communication protocols for inter-vehicle communications (e.g., DDS, ROS 2)
- Experience integrating third-party software and APIs
- Experience with standards such as PYRAMID, FACE, ARP 4754A, DO-178C, or similar
- Systems architecting and requirements writing experience
- Ability to work in field environments, troubleshooting and deploying systems in challenging conditions
- Must hold or be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance
