Cloudflare Browser Isolation runs web content in remote browsers to protect users from threats while preserving a responsive browsing experience. The team builds the Chromium-based browsing engine, remote rendering and streaming technology, and distributed services that manage browser sessions across Cloudflare's global network.
In this role, you will work at the intersection of systems programming, distributed systems, and security. You will be accountable for reliable delivery within a defined component or problem area, making sound implementation decisions and building broader system knowledge over time. This is not an organization-wide architecture role, but rather a focused individual contributor position with support from experienced teammates.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own well-scoped features and improvements from design through implementation, testing, rollout, and production follow-up
- Develop and maintain C++ code in the Chromium-based browser, and contribute across distributed services written in Go, Rust, and TypeScript
- Debug failures across browser processes, Linux hosts, and distributed services using logs, metrics, traces, and profiling tools
- Improve session reliability, startup time, interactive latency, and resource efficiency with measured validation
- Write maintainable code, automated tests, and clear design notes; participate in code and design reviews
- Collaborate with teammates and partner teams, communicating trade-offs and blockers
- Participate in the team's production on-call rotation after onboarding and contribute to incident mitigation
The role may require flexibility to be on-call outside standard working hours to address technical issues.
Technologies used include Chromium and C++ for the browser engine, Rust for systems programming, Go/TypeScript/Cloudflare Workers/Nomad/Consul for distributed services, WebRTC and Skia for remote rendering, and TypeScript/WebAssembly/WebGL for the browser client.
Requirements:
- Experience delivering and maintaining production software with practical C++ proficiency and understanding of memory ownership, resource lifetimes, and concurrency
- Linux/UNIX fundamentals including processes, threads, networking, and system diagnostic tools
- Working knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software design
- Experience developing or operating distributed systems with understanding of service-to-service communication, timeouts, retries, partial failure, and consistency trade-offs
- Ability to navigate unfamiliar codebases, break problems into deliverable steps, and test correctness and failure cases
- Systematic approach to debugging and performance analysis using evidence-based hypothesis formation
- Clear communication, collaborative problem-solving, and willingness to learn Rust, Go, TypeScript, and the broader stack
Bonus qualifications (preferred, not required):
- Browser engines, Chromium, browser sandboxing, or security-sensitive systems experience
- Low-latency streaming, graphics, remote computing, or real-time systems
- Container and workload orchestration (Nomad or Kubernetes) and service discovery
- Rust for systems programming or distributed services
- Go, TypeScript, WebRTC, Skia, WebAssembly, or WebGL
- Production observability, capacity planning, incident response, or build/release infrastructure
