Archangel Lightworks is a laser communications company building wireless technology for space-to-ground data transfer. Founded in 2017 and recently closed a £10M Series A, the company develops optical ground stations (TERRA-M) with proven capability for satellite communications. The company is supported by the UK Space Agency, Department of Science and Technology, and Ministry of Defence.
You will join the engineering team as a Systems Analysis & Simulations Engineer, responsible for performing simulation and analysis to optimize optical space-to-ground communication links and services.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and test algorithms for forecasting link availability based on meteorological forecasts and terminal sensor data
- Perform link performance estimation and optimization based on expected conditions; analyze empirical data to enable continuous improvement
- Develop and utilize Archangel Lightworks' laser communications network simulation tool to assess network-level performance of optical communication systems, supporting site selection and network architecture development
- Define use cases, scenarios, and KPIs; analyze large simulation datasets; optimize simulation efficiency
- Generate technical reports, visualizations, and presentations to communicate results to internal and external stakeholders
- Support development and testing of other analysis and simulation tools to improve product performance and service delivery
The role is based in Osney Mead, Oxford, with opportunity to work from home as agreed with your line manager. Periodic business travel may be required.

Requirements:
- 3 years of experience
- Developed complex models and simulations in MATLAB/Simulink, ideally using meteorological data or involving networks/communications
- Experience developing, testing, and analyzing empirical data
- Experience processing and analyzing large datasets efficiently
- MATLAB and Python experience
Desirable skills:
- Satellite communications or lasercom experience
- Understanding of optical turbulence and associated modeling tools
- Understanding of orbital mechanics, satellite constellations, and NTN networks
- Experience developing link budgets and associated tradeoff analysis
- Experience using ML/neural networks for meteorological analysis, forecasting, network traffic, or network modeling
