Extreme Networks is seeking a Staff Software Systems Engineer to technically lead the sustenance team responsible for maintaining, supporting, and enhancing Network Automation and Orchestration products. This is a hands-on technical leadership role with company-wide scope across the product lifecycle. In this role, you will own the overall sustenance engineering lifecycle, including defect resolution, product enhancements, maintenance releases, and associated design, code, and unit/integration test artifacts. You will drive engineering excellence through effective debugging, root-cause analysis, code quality, regression testing, and automation of repetitive maintenance activities. You will analyze production issues and customer-reported defects, establish root causes, and drive timely resolution in collaboration with cross-functional teams including Product Management, Development, QA, and Customer Support. A key aspect of this role is mentoring team members on troubleshooting, design principles, coding standards, testing practices, and effective problem-solving. You will collaborate closely with multiple engineering teams to ensure end-to-end resolution of product issues and successful delivery of enhancements. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in microservices-based architecture, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm), and cloud application development. You must have strong hands-on coding experience with Java or Golang, proficiency with Linux OS, and intricate understanding of multi-threading, network programming, and object-oriented methodologies. You should be comfortable with Agile development, CI/CD pipelines, and Git workflows. You will need solid knowledge of data management technologies including RDBMS, NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, Redis, MariaDB), and messaging services (RabbitMQ, Kafka). Networking expertise is essential: familiarity with OpenAPI, OpenConfig, NETCONF, Streaming Telemetry, GNMI, gRPC, and XMPP, as well as L2/L3 OSI layer protocols (802.1Q, LAGs, VxLAN, EVPN, ACLs, BGP, MPLS/VPLS, and routing concepts). Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are required, along with proficiency in local and remote debugging. Experience with network orchestration platforms, building scalable distributed systems, and telemetry/streaming analytics is highly valued. REQUIREMENTS: - 8–13 years of software engineering experience - Complete exposure to the entire Product Life Cycle (must-have) - Strong coding and debugging experience with Java or Golang - Hands-on experience with Docker containers, Kubernetes (K8s, K3s) clusters, and Helm charts - Microservices-based architecture and best practices - Linux OS proficiency, advanced data structures, and IPC mechanisms - Multi-threading, network programming, and object-oriented methodologies - Agile Development Model with CI/CD, Jenkins pipeline, and Git - Database concepts: RDBMS, NoSQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, MariaDB - Messaging services: RabbitMQ and Kafka - Networking protocols: OpenAPI, OpenConfig, NETCONF, Streaming Telemetry, GNMI, gRPC, XMPP - L2/L3 OSI layer protocols: 802.1Q, LAGs, VxLAN, EVPN, ACLs, Route Policy, MPLS/VPLS, BGP, L2 Forwarding, L3 Routing - Exceptional written and verbal communication skills - Proficiency in local and remote debugging PREFERRED: - Experience with network orchestration platforms and automation frameworks - Background in building scalable, highly available distributed systems - Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical teams - Familiarity with containerized deployment architectures and orchestration platforms - Prior experience with telemetry and streaming analytics
