Ro is building a vertically integrated healthcare platform that connects telehealth, diagnostics, pharmacy, and logistics into a seamless end-to-end experience. As a Staff Software Engineer/Tech Lead on the Patient Experience team, you will serve as a technical and architectural leader for systems that help patients discover, start, and continue their care journey with Ro.
You will be responsible for the patient-facing platform supporting the entire patient lifecycle—from initial intake through ongoing care management. Rather than building one-off experiments, you'll design the architecture and technical foundations that enable continuous iteration and personalization of the patient experience as the company learns more about patient needs. You'll act as a strong technical partner to Growth and Clinical teams, translating patient and business needs into scalable technical solutions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Translating patient and growth opportunities into technical strategy, partnering with product and engineering to determine how systems should evolve
- Leading complex, backend-oriented engineering work across healthcare intake, prescription flows, commerce, merchandising, subscriptions, and renewals
- Shaping ambiguous problems from early stages, bringing systems thinking and technical judgment into product decisions
- Elevating the team's technical and product thinking, helping engineers reason about both underlying systems and patient/business outcomes
- Building systems and foundations that enable faster iteration, creating reusable capabilities for testing and scaling new experiences
- Developing deep understanding of Ro's business and patient journey, translating insights into high-impact technical opportunities
You'll work on systems operating at scale, solving complex high-concurrency problems across a full-stack platform. The Patient Experience team operates across a highly visible and interconnected part of the patient journey, partnering closely with engineering, product, design, and data to translate complex clinical information into clear, intuitive next steps for patients.
Requirements:
- Strong technical judgment and demonstrated track record of impact through scope and complexity of problems led
- Deeply outcome-oriented with track record of measuring impact, learning from results, and continuously improving product and processes
- Deep backend and systems design expertise, with ability to reason across services, APIs, data flows, dependencies, and architectural boundaries
- Strong product judgment with demonstrated ability to connect technical/architectural decisions to patient, growth, and business outcomes
- Experience leading technical work for consumer-facing growth experiences (acquisition, onboarding, conversion, merchandising, subscriptions, retention, renewal)
- Track record of leading architecture across complex, interconnected systems, partnering effectively with other engineering teams and influencing technical direction across organizational boundaries
- Ability to move fluidly between product and systems thinking, understanding patient experience while reasoning deeply about enabling architecture
- Comfort operating in ambiguous, cross-functional environments, creating clarity, navigating tradeoffs, and driving complex technical work forward
- Strong backend engineering fundamentals and experience building complex production systems
- Proficiency in Python or equivalent experience with similar languages to quickly become effective in Ro's Python-based stack
- Experience with healthcare, commerce, or other regulated/data-sensitive domains is a plus
