Braze is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the User Targeting team as a hands-on technical leader. The team is responsible for how customers segment and target their users, processing billions of users per day through core pipelines that power every message Braze sends. This is a fast-paced, customer-facing role in a high-impact area of the product.
You will architect and own complex systems end-to-end, from the segmentation engine and data pipelines through APIs and customer-facing dashboards, at the scale required by major global brands. You'll have input into both what the team builds and how it gets built, with constant consideration for architecture, performance, and cost—measured ultimately by customer value delivered.
Key responsibilities include:
- Architect and build large-scale systems handling massive data volumes and complex real-time workloads, including extending the ClickHouse pipeline for new filters and attributes
- Own the product roadmap in partnership with product management, defining priorities and continuously improving post-launch based on customer usage
- Take ownership of complex backend systems behind Braze segmentation, improving performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness
- Lead by example and mentor engineers on software design, coding, and operational best practices
- Collaborate cross-functionally with other engineering teams, product managers, and stakeholders to ensure effective integration and alignment
- Identify opportunities to improve systems, research new technologies, and advocate for adoption
- Support and refine operational procedures (alerts, on-call, troubleshooting) to maximize stability and quality
The team extensively integrates AI into daily workflows, using agentic tools to navigate the Ruby monolith, create proofs of concept, and move quickly from requirements to production solutions.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including hands-on full-stack or backend services work, particularly with high-scale, high-throughput systems
- Proven track record delivering customer-facing products on high-scale data systems, from problem definition through launch and adoption, with clear evidence of customer or business impact
- Demonstrated experience building foundational data-driven systems at scale (streaming, real-time pipelines, or large-scale data platforms)
- Strong technical leadership skills: ability to drive architectural direction, scope large efforts, manage technical debt, and communicate complex concepts precisely
- Deep understanding of software design, data structures, and algorithms
- Excellent communication and organizational skills; history of thriving in team environments
- Self-starter mentality
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with Ruby, Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, React, Sidekiq, SQL/NoSQL databases
- Experience with MongoDB, ClickHouse, Snowflake, or similar data lake solutions
- Container orchestration (Kubernetes) and cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Distributed systems, API design, monitoring, and architectural best practices
- Passion for customer experience
