Wayve is building embodied AI for autonomous driving, and this role is the first dedicated Staff Software Engineer for the Storage Platform team. You'll set technical direction for managing, protecting and serving hundreds of petabytes of driving data—growing toward exabyte scale—that powers model training, simulation and data pipelines across regions and clouds.
Your day-to-day work includes leading multi-quarter storage programmes from problem definition through delivery and adoption. You'll build production services, controllers and infrastructure using Python, Go or similar languages, alongside Kubernetes and Terraform. You'll partner closely with ML, Data Engineering, Infrastructure, Security and Privacy teams to understand data access patterns, remove storage bottlenecks, reduce GPU idle time waiting for data, and strengthen access controls and safe deletion practices.
Key focus areas include: data ownership and governance (dataset tagging, retention classes, team-level cost attribution); safe lifecycle management (retention, deletion, re-tiering for Azure Blob with audit trails and recovery); read performance and caching (throughput, latency, small-object reads, cross-region optimization); secure data movement (Kubernetes-native NVMe caching, secure replication); and measurable platform outcomes (SLOs for availability, performance, cache effectiveness, storage tiers and cost).
You'll write design documents and RFCs, align teams around shared standards, and mentor engineers as the platform and team grow. Wayve operates a hybrid model with main hubs in London, Sunnyvale, Yokohama, Herzliya, Vancouver and Leonberg. The company is not yet fully structured—much of how it works is still being written, and you'll help shape it.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrated Staff Engineer scope: leading complex infrastructure programmes across multiple teams from problem definition through adoption.
- End-to-end ownership of petabyte-scale object storage, including data layout, lifecycle management, performance and cost optimization with measurable outcomes against cost targets.
- Experience building scalable systems for data ownership, tagging, cataloguing, retention or deletion.
- Strong security and access-management background: IAM/RBAC, encryption, secure replication, auditing.
- Hands-on software engineering with strong Python, Go or comparable skills; production Kubernetes, Terraform and CI experience. You build durable platforms and services, not scripts.
- Ability to influence technical decisions without formal authority, mentor others, and thrive in a founding, hands-on role with opportunity to grow a team.
- Ability to work hybrid from the London office.
- AWS or GCP experience is welcome; exclusive Azure experience is not required.
