Rula is a mental healthcare platform dedicated to making quality, evidence-based mental health care accessible. We're seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our Partnerships, Referrals & Conversions engineering team.
In this role, you'll architect and evolve systems that power patient referrals, partner integrations, and booking experiences. You'll design scalable referral pathways, manage partner data systems, and build patient-centric experiences that directly impact how partners refer patients to Rula and how those patients access care.
As a Staff Engineer and technical leader, you'll shape the technical direction of the team by bringing clarity to ambiguity, designing durable systems, and delivering high-impact software. You'll partner closely with your Engineering Manager, product managers, designers, and other engineers to align technical decisions with business goals. Beyond your own contributions, you'll mentor engineers, unblock peers, and raise the technical bar across the organization.
The team values product-minded engineers who identify problems, move quickly, and help build the right solution efficiently. You'll leverage AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, etc.) as a natural part of your workflow, staying current with the evolving landscape and forming opinions on where these tools add value versus where human judgment is essential.
Rula is a remote-first company currently hiring across most U.S. states (excluding Hawaii). REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Deep understanding of modern application design architecture, API design patterns, security, performance, and scaling
- Experience designing and evolving system architectures with ability to weigh tradeoffs
- Proven ability to lead complex technical projects across teams, shaping scope, estimates, and execution while aligning technical decisions with business goals
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build positive relationships with partners and stakeholders
- Fluency with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, etc.) and ability to articulate where they accelerate delivery and where they introduce risk
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field (or comparable work experience)
- Familiarity with modern infrastructure and tooling
- Experience with distributed systems development, especially event-based paradigms
- Experience building systems to interface or integrate with third parties
- Comfortable troubleshooting complex production issues and advocating for reliability improvements
- Prior experience in early-stage and/or high-growth startup environments with comfort navigating ambiguity
