Rula is a mental health platform focused on addiction treatment and broader mental health care delivery. The company is Series C-funded and remote-first, operating across most U.S. states.
You'll join the Provider Growth, Acquisition & Supply Management team as a Staff Software Engineer. This team solves a fundamental supply-side problem in mental healthcare: ensuring Rula has the right providers to meet patient demand. Your work will directly impact how providers discover Rula, onboard onto the platform, and build sustainable practices—ultimately enabling patients to find care faster.
In this role, you'll be a technical leader and architect, bringing clarity to ambiguous problems, designing robust distributed systems, and shipping software that meaningfully improves the provider experience. You'll work at the intersection of provider experience and marketplace dynamics, reducing friction in how providers deliver care while increasing supply where it matters most.
You're expected to be product-minded: seeing problems, moving quickly, and collaborating with the team to build the right solution. You'll lead technical initiatives across multiple teams, influence strategy without direct authority, and foster a high-performing engineering culture through code reviews, documentation, and mentoring.
The team values hands-on engineering paired with strategic thinking. You'll use modern AI-assisted development tools (like Claude Code) as part of your regular workflow, and you'll help shape how the team adopts AI to improve development speed and quality.
Rula offers a fully remote environment with flexible working hours, comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision, life, disability, FSA/HSA), 401(k) access, generous time off (including 2 company-wide shutdown weeks annually), paid parental leave, an Employee Assistance Program, quarterly team stipends, home office setup support, and ongoing wellness initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building scalable distributed systems
- Strong full-stack engineering background: modern frontend frameworks, backend APIs, data modeling, and distributed systems
- Demonstrated experience leading initiatives across multiple teams and influencing technical strategy without direct authority
- Hands-on experience using AI-assisted software development tools (e.g., Claude Code) as part of regular workflows
- Passion for fostering high-performing engineering culture through code reviews, technical documentation, and mentoring
- Strong communication skills; ability to align technical and non-technical stakeholders
PREFERRED:
- Experience building AI-powered engineering workflows, tooling, or automation adopted by others with measurable impact on development speed or quality
- End-to-end project ownership from discovery through post-launch support
- Experience with Node.js, React, TypeScript, Kafka, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes
- Track record thriving in fast-paced, high-growth startups where you helped scale engineering organizations
