Vanta is a trust management platform helping enterprises build, maintain, and demonstrate security and compliance. The company is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to own the architectural foundation of a newly chartered Program Structure & Trust group. In this defining technical role, you will own the design, phased delivery, and long-term technical direction of Vanta's enterprise organizational model—a multi-quarter initiative that cuts across the platform. You'll design and deliver hierarchical product lines and business units, isolated data access and ownership, cross-cutting audit workflows, scoped approvals, and data residency support (EU and GovCloud). Your work will establish the foundation for how enterprise customers structure, segment, and operate within Vanta. Key responsibilities include: - Own design and multi-quarter delivery of the enterprise org model, including hierarchical structures, data isolation, audit workflows, and compliance requirements - Define core abstractions that solve for the general case rather than one-off customer accommodations - Retrofit a live production system toward multi-tenancy: design safe migration paths, sequence delivery incrementally, and preserve continuity for existing customers - Ship meaningful customer value each quarter while progressing toward the full solution, requiring product judgment and direct enterprise customer engagement - Drive execution across squads outside your direct area through technical clarity and credibility - Partner with Engineering leadership, Product, and Design to translate long-term vision into phased, deliverable work - Set technical standards for the group, define patterns, shape architecture, and model engineering excellence You'll work in a fast-paced, product-focused environment where complex technical problems are solved incrementally and shipped in stages. The role requires balancing architectural vision with pragmatic delivery and the ability to make complex systems legible to engineering leadership, product partners, and customer-facing stakeholders. Requirements: - 10+ years of deep backend engineering experience with a track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives in fast-paced, product-focused environments - Designed platform abstractions that absorbed messy, conflicting enterprise requirements across diverse customer bases; solved for the general case, not the loudest customer request - Track record of shipping in stages: moved large, structurally complex problems forward incrementally with each phase standing on its own - History of operating effectively across squads and teams you don't own—alignment built through technical clarity and credibility, not org chart proximity - Deep familiarity with enterprise architectural patterns: tenancy models, role-based access control, data isolation, scoped permissions, cross-tenant operations, and access boundary design - Strong communication skills—ability to make complex systems legible in writing and in the room - Data residency or GovCloud exposure is a plus (can ramp in a quarter) - Open to using AI to amplify skills and strengthen work, demonstrating curiosity and sound judgment in applying AI responsibly
