Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Invoicing and Billing platform team. This role operates across the full lifecycle of Gusto's commerce systems: shaping architecture in the design process, improving and maintaining a high-throughput transactional billing platform, building self-service internal features and APIs, and owning performance long after launch. You'll engineer the core commerce engine that enables product teams to launch new products and Gusto to monetize its offering, including support for new billing models like multi-entity, multi-currency, and anniversary billing.
Day-to-day responsibilities include designing, building, and testing Gusto's core billing platform (usage jobs, subscriptions, orders, invoice generation, payments, reporting, accounting integrations). You'll mentor other engineers on solving complex technical problems at large scale, help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world, and collaborate with Product Engineering, Product Management, Data, and Design teams to understand customer pain points and prototype, iterate, and launch solutions. The role emphasizes building products that customers genuinely love.
Gusto is on a mission to grow the small business economy, handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR so business owners can focus on their craft. The company supports more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide with teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York. AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto, and all team members are expected to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role.
Hybrid work in San Francisco with expectations to work from the office approximately 2-3 days per week. Travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required.
