Carta is a connected platform and AI-native ecosystem for private capital, serving 55,000 companies, 1.8M+ equity holders, and 10,000 funds representing $250B+ in assets under management across 160+ countries. The Investors business unit is building the system of record for private markets—ledger, books, tax filings, LP reporting, and deal pipeline in one connected platform. Nearly 7,000 funds and SPVs with $150B in assets already use it. The team is moving beyond portals to build a programmable back office where expenses are auto-coded, capital calls are generated from sentences, and K-1s are ready on day one. The core is proven (90% of cash transactions reconciled in one day), and now the focus is connecting it into a unified platform spanning fund financials, tax, and LP reporting. As a Staff Engineer, you will be responsible for the long-term technical health and success of the Investors business unit. Your responsibilities include: - Navigate Ambiguity: Tackle complex, poorly defined problems and break them into navigable paths for the organization. - Champion Systemic Improvement: Identify and eliminate failure patterns across multiple systems, driving architectural changes that improve scalability and reliability. - Bridge Technical Gaps: Use deep cross-functional understanding to align multiple teams on major technical decisions. - Define the AI Frontier: Lead transformation in how the organization builds by defining context and building rails that allow every engineer to leverage AI tools safely and effectively. - Uphold Engineering Standards: Set the vision for operational excellence and mentor senior engineers to raise the collective craft. You'll be hired into the Investors business unit and matched to a focus area based on your strengths and interests. Focus areas include: - Fund Financials: Ledger, expense allocation, and cash reconciliation—getting numbers right automatically at scale. - Tax and Compliance: K-1s, KYC, and audit trails—compliance as code instead of compliance as a checklist. - LP Management and Reporting: Capital calls, distributions, PCAPs, and tearsheets—turning quarterly reporting from a scramble into a query. You lead through influence rather than authority, acting as a role model for constructive communication and technical discipline. You anticipate future roadblocks and build systems that support long-term business growth. You are an expert in building distributed systems. While the primary stack is Python/Django, React, and Postgres, you should be comfortable guiding technical direction across JVM languages, gRPC, and cloud-native infrastructure (AWS). REQUIREMENTS: - 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of high-level technical leadership - Expert in building distributed systems - Proficiency with Python/Django, React, and Postgres - Comfort guiding technical direction across JVM languages, gRPC, and cloud-native infrastructure (AWS) - Leadership through influence; strong communication and technical discipline - Ability to anticipate future roadblocks and design systems for long-term growth
