Salary: USD 228,000 - 252,000 / annual

Muon Space, a LEO satellite constellation provider founded in 2021, is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join its government programs team. In this role, you will have high-level organizational impact designing foundational architecture, developing shared libraries and services, and establishing technical strategies to ship customer-facing features. You will serve as a technical lead building the platforms that enable Muon's government missions, working within a tight-knit team that values open communication, cross-functional collaboration, and rapid execution without compromising quality. Key responsibilities include designing, building, and evolving high-performance systems that are scalable, resilient, and reliable in regulated environments. You will deploy, operate, and maintain software platforms and infrastructure in classified environments while meeting relevant security, compliance, and accreditation requirements. You will own architectural decisions that shape the long-term direction of core systems, ensure execution across interdependent multi-month epics, and define metrics aligned with critical company goals. You will identify and resolve bottlenecks, performance issues, and systemic risks in production environments, partner with cross-functional teams to translate business and product needs into well-crafted technical solutions, and mentor teams and senior engineers while defining standards for code, testing, design, and review. You will take ownership of systems, tools, and processes that have broad company impact. Muon Space designs, builds, and operates LEO satellite constellations delivering mission-critical data with applications ranging from climate monitoring to national security. The company operates a state-of-the-art facility in Silicon Valley optimized for spacecraft manufacturing and rapid payload integration at scale. QUALIFICATIONS: - BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field OR equivalent industry experience - 10+ years of software engineering experience with strong proficiency in Python, C++, or Rust in production environments - Technical depth in distributed systems, backend services, or platform development - Demonstrated experience building and operating mission-critical services with uptime, reliability, and performance requirements - Knowledge of cloud-native infrastructure (containers, service orchestration, observability stacks) - Experience mentoring engineers and leading large technical initiatives - Active US security clearance; TS/SCI preferred - Experience deploying and operating software infrastructure in classified environments strongly preferred - Familiarity with government accreditation processes (ATO, RMF) and DevSecOps in classified environments preferred - Comfort working in highly interdisciplinary environments with engineers, operators, and domain specialists - Familiarity with real-time data processing pipelines or high-throughput systems - Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, or automated deployment workflows - Contributions to open-source projects or track record of technical writing and knowledge sharing ITAR/EAR Requirements: This position requires access to export-controlled information.
