Credit Genie is a mobile-first financial wellness platform founded in 2019 by Ed Harycki (former Swift Capital founder, acquired by PayPal). Backed by Khosla Ventures and led by industry veterans from PayPal, Square, and Cash App, the company uses AI to provide personalized financial insights and offers tools for instant cash access and credit building.
The Financial Platform team owns the systems that move money at Credit Genie: cash advances, repayments, refunds, bank account linking, debit card management, and ledgering/reconciliation. As Staff Engineer, you will set the technical direction for the money movement platform and raise the engineering bar across the team.
Key responsibilities:
- Own the architecture and long-term technical roadmap for money movement systems, making foundational decisions on payment orchestration, ledgering, and reconciliation as transaction volume scales
- Design financial systems with provably correct properties: idempotent operations, exactly-once semantics, auditable state transitions, automated reconciliation, and invariant monitoring
- Build and scale backend systems end-to-end from architecture through production operation, ensuring high performance, security, and scalability
- Set the standard for engineering quality: lead design reviews, mentor senior and mid-level engineers, establish practices for testing, observability, and operational excellence
- Own platform connections to the financial world: bank account linking through data aggregators, debit card lifecycle management, and processor integrations
- Treat reliability of money movement as a first-class problem: lead incident response, drive post-incident hardening, build monitoring and safeguards
- Partner cross-functionally with product, compliance, risk, data science, and banking/processor partners to ship features balancing speed with regulatory rigor
The company expects in-office presence five days per week to foster collaboration and culture, with flexibility for personal circumstances. Benefits include 100% company-paid medical/dental/vision, up to $100/month fitness reimbursement or complimentary LifeTime/Equinox membership, 401(k) with 3.5% match and immediate vesting, meal programs, $1,000 HSA match, life and accidental insurance, and flexible PTO. Eligible for bonus and equity programs.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years designing, building, and scaling high-performance backend systems in fast-paced, high-growth environments
- Direct experience building and operating financial platform systems at scale (payments, money movement, lending, ledgering, billing, or banking infrastructure) handling high volumes of real customer funds
- Deep fluency in correctness patterns financial software demands: idempotency, distributed transactions, double-entry accounting, reconciliation, retry safety, and auditability
- Track record of setting technical direction for a team: owned architecture of significant systems, driven roadmap evolution, mentored engineers through design reviews
- High ownership as default: treat systems end-to-end from design through incident response, raise and fix problems proactively
- Expertise architecting and productionizing large-scale distributed systems
- Strong understanding of data privacy, compliance, and secure coding practices; experience designing resilient systems meeting high security and regulatory standards
- Structured thinking and analytical rigor to break down complex systems, identify flaws, implement scalable/secure/maintainable solutions
NICE TO HAVE:
- Hands-on experience with payment rails and partners (ACH, RTP, card networks, push-to-debit, direct processor/bank integrations)
- Experience with bank data aggregators (Plaid, MX, Finicity) or card issuing/debit card management platforms
- Experience in regulated consumer fintech (lending, credit, or banking products)
- Experience with event-driven architectures and TypeScript/Node.js services
- Experience leading incident response and building invariant/anomaly monitoring for financial data
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools to raise team quality and velocity
