Hover uses proprietary AI built on over a decade of real property data to help homeowners, contractors, and insurance professionals design, improve, and protect properties. The company creates fully measured, accurate, and interactive 3D models from smartphone scans.
You will serve as a technical owner within the Property Scope team, setting direction for 3D scoping, estimates, and scope-to-order systems, including material catalog, pricing, and ordering across insurance claims and homeowner projects. This is a high-impact role where you'll shape strategy as an equal partner to the Principal Product Manager.
Your responsibilities include:
- Designing how inspection data flows into the estimates engine to eliminate re-entry of data Hover already knows
- Ensuring Hover estimates meet enterprise carrier requirements and export cleanly to platforms like Xactimate and Cotality
- Setting visible code quality and throughput standards for engineers across levels
- Partnering with product, design, insurance integrations, and materials platform teams on shared surfaces
- Converting Hover's property data into scope, cost, and design recommendations for homeowners planning property changes
- Spending approximately two days per week hands-on in design and code
- Sitting with adjusters and contractors to understand real workflows
- Reviewing code to unblock the team and providing engineering managers with clear technical assessments
- Helping hire engineers to build this work with you
- Defining shared surfaces as restoration and retail workflows converge
The team is being rebuilt around this role, giving you significant influence over architecture, engineering standards, and team structure.
Requirements:
- Experience operating as a Staff Software Engineer or equivalent, setting technical direction for a product area across multiple engineers
- Deep backend and systems design skills with a track record of owning a complex domain end-to-end rather than a single service
- Experience building customer-facing products and comfort working directly with customers to understand workflows
- Clear, direct communication: giving specific feedback, stating where things stand, and contributing to product and business decisions beyond technical ones
- Comfort making progress while direction is still being set
- Experience with Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, GraphQL, and PostgreSQL, or a similar stack you can ramp on quickly
Nice-to-haves:
- Shipped LLM or agent-based features to customers and use AI tools in your own engineering work
- Experience with catalog, pricing, quoting, or CPQ systems
- Background in construction, restoration, insurance claims, field service, or vertical software that replaced paper/spreadsheet workflows
- Experience with estimatics platforms such as Xactimate or Cotality
- Time in a strong engineering organization and at a startup (as engineer or founder), including helping teams or products scale
