Salary: USD 200,000 - 250,000 / annual
Flex is a growth-stage fintech company headquartered in NYC that is transforming how renters pay rent. The company enables users to pay rent throughout the month on a flexible schedule that fits their finances, helping them avoid late fees and build credit. You'll join as a Staff Backend Engineer to design, build, and scale the core services and integrations powering Payment, Billing, Identity, and partner integrations.
In this role, you will set the long-term technical vision and architecture for complex, distributed systems you own. You'll lead scoping, design, and implementation across teams, drive your own production rollouts with minimal oversight, and work closely with product, design, and engineering peers to solve renters' most pressing problems through small, frequent iterations. You'll also mentor engineers across the organization, raising the technical bar and driving consistency in best practices.
Flexible team options include:
- Partner Integrations: standardizing APIs, tools, and processes for external partners to connect to Flex for data sharing and payments
- Money Team: building and owning platforms, tooling, and documentation for payments, wallet, and settlement finance systems
The role is hybrid based in New York with expectations of 2-3 days per week on-site. Flex has a distributed team across the US, Australia, Canada, and South America.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
- 8+ years software engineering experience
- 6+ years Java experience
- Proven ability to set technical direction and architecture for complex, distributed systems
- Ability to lead and mentor engineers, raising the technical bar across a team or org
- Experience working on globally-distributed teams with high degree of ownership
- Experience with technical and non-technical stakeholders, aligning on scope and delivery
- Experience building robust, fault-tolerant systems with multiple external dependencies
- Experience designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines
- Proficiency in Java frameworks and tools: Spring (core/web/boot), Gradle, JUnit, JVM (memory/performance tuning, GC)
- Experience with Service-Oriented Architecture, REST APIs, Message Queues, and scalable architectures
- Experience with AWS (EKS, Aurora RDS, Elasticache, DynamoDB) and containerization tools
Preferred:
- Proficiency in CI/CD systems (preferably GitHub Actions), git, and automation
- Skilled in observability and monitoring tools such as DataDog
- Experience with big data platforms including Snowflake
- Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code using CDK and Terraform
- Track record of elevating team standards through best practices and mentoring
- Excellent written and verbal communication with cross-functional strategy influence
