OpenGov is the leader in AI and ERP solutions for local and state governments in the U.S., serving over 2,000 cities, counties, state agencies, school districts, and special districts. The company's platform includes enterprise asset management, procurement and contract management, accounting and budgeting, billing and revenue management, permitting and licensing, and transparency solutions.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will deliver new product capabilities across the full stack—from database models to UI components—owning features end-to-end. AI is central to your work: you will use AI-assisted development tools daily to accelerate output, build AI-powered product experiences for government customers, and help establish practices that make the team effective in this new operating model.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and improving APIs, microservices, and frontend experiences that power government agencies at scale
- Owning features end-to-end: collaborating with Product and Design to define problems, build solutions, ship them, and monitor in production
- Building AI-powered product features including intelligent data analysis, agent-driven workflows, and AI-assisted user experiences
- Using AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) as a core part of your workflow to accelerate coding, debugging, and documentation
- Producing clean, well-documented code and conducting thorough reviews of both human-written and AI-generated code
- Collaborating across the organization to translate business priorities into shipped features that drive customer success
The tech stack includes React, TypeScript, Ember.js, Node.js, GraphQL, REST, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, and Docker.
OpenGov operates in a fast-paced, results-driven environment with a global team of 800+ employees. The company is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dubuque, Dallas, and Pune.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years of professional experience building scalable software in an agile environment
- Strong experience with modern JavaScript/TypeScript frameworks (React or similar) and backend development
- Comfortable working across the stack—frontend, backend, data layer—and shipping features end-to-end
- Experience building heavily utilized enterprise SaaS software
- Active use of AI-assisted development tools with judgment about when they accelerate vs. when they lead astray
- Experience building AI-powered product features: agents, AI-driven UX, workflow automation, or retrieval systems (direct ML/model training experience not required)
- Experience building APIs, designing database models (SQL and NoSQL), and working with event-driven patterns
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment where new ideas ship daily, staying closely aligned to customer needs and outcomes
- Demonstrated experience working directly with customers to improve product experiences
- Track record of experimenting with new AI tools and bringing effective ones to your team
- Track record of driving team improvement through mentoring and process innovation
- Previous work in govtech, fintech, or regulated SaaS environments (preferred)
