OpenGov is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join Community Intelligence, a new founding engineering team in the Boston office. This role focuses on bringing next-generation physical-world sensing and AI-based detection into OpenGov's Community Operations suite, treating sensing as a native, foundational capability rather than an external add-on. You will design and build systems that transform raw sensor data into structured records, condition assessments, and automated workflows across multiple products. Key responsibilities include: - Design and build the sensing-platform connector/adapter layer that maps LiDAR- and imagery-derived asset detections into OpenGov products - Architect the automated detection-to-case pipeline that converts sensing detections into properly routed records in product workflow engines, including photo evidence, GPS coordinates, and severity scores - Evaluate, integrate, or build computer-vision and LiDAR-fusion models, including technical paths for consolidating with or extending the existing Vision AI microservice - Design the data model and storage layer for continuously updated spatial data shared across five Community Operations products - Own the technical design for a tiered sensing-ingestion model supporting satellite, fleet-vehicle camera, and full LiDAR survey approaches with different refresh cadences and accuracy levels - Partner with engineering and product leads across OpenGov to sequence the sensing roadmap against each product's asset taxonomy and compliance requirements - Write clear technical design documents that AI tooling can execute against; review and own AI-generated code for correctness, security, and architectural fit - Establish testing, monitoring, and data-quality standards for systems whose outputs feed regulatory and safety-relevant workflows, including ADA compliance and FEMA reimbursement documentation OpenGov serves more than 2,000 cities, counties, state agencies, school districts, and special districts with AI and ERP solutions for local and state governments. The company operates in a fast-paced, results-driven environment with 800+ employees across offices in San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dubuque, Dallas, and Pune. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: - 12+ years of software engineering experience with a track record of owning complex, cross-system integrations end-to-end in production SaaS environments - Experience building or integrating computer-vision, LiDAR, or geospatial data-processing pipelines; comfort with point-cloud or 3D spatial data is a strong plus - Strong data-modeling and API/connector design skills, able to reconcile third-party data schemas against multiple existing internal data models without resorting to one-off custom logic - Experience with geospatial systems (PostGIS, spatial indexing, coordinate reference systems) preferred - Comfortable operating with incomplete information and ambiguous vendor integration paths; makes and defends build-vs-integrate decisions - Experience partnering across multiple product teams and translating strategic technical vision into scoped, sequenced delivery plans - Track record of shipping systems where data accuracy carries real compliance or safety consequences (regulatory, infrastructure, or public-sector systems) is a strong plus - Proficient in AI-native engineering workflows: can direct AI tooling for scaffolding, test generation, and code review while retaining ownership of architecture and correctness - Excellent written communication; can produce technical design documents that align stakeholders across five product teams - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
